Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong

Hong Kong's standard in style and substance
VERIFIED LUXURY
Island Shangri-La has presence. "The Great Motherland of China," a 167-foot-high silk painting rumored to be the largest of its kind in the world, covers one wall of the central atrium, opposite bubble elevators that run all the way from the grandiose Island Ballroom to the roof garden.

That’s not to say that the hotel caters just to art lovers, business travelers flock here for its business center and executive rooms. They loosen their ties at Café TOO (the hotel’s hallmark dining venue that features show kitchens cooking up various cuisines), or tuck in their shirts for a more formal affair at the Lobster Bar and Grill or Restaurant Petrus.

But in Hong Kong’s stifling summers, the most welcome amenity of all is perhaps the hotel’s outdoor pool, an oasis for guests of all stripes.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Though the hotel is situated amid a cluster of skyscrapers in Hong Kong’s Central neighborhood, its location across from leafy Hong Kong Park makes the hotel’s heated, outdoor, 90-foot-long pool feel like an urban oasis.
  • In a town where business rules, this is one hotel that actually caters to and welcomes families, with services such as babysitting available.
  • There are so many spaces to relax outside of your room, the whole hotel begins to feel like your abode (maybe it’s the signature white tea scent used throughout the hotel that makes it feel so welcoming). The business center is like having an extra living room, and there’s even a lounge off the lobby for sitting back with a drink and a grassy knoll near the pool for a little green space.
  • Island Shangri-La is located in a tower that rises above Central’s Pacific Place shopping center, which houses an array of luxury shops such as British department store Harvey Nichols and boutiques like Bottega Veneta and Diane von Furstenberg. There’s even a movie theater and a slew of restaurants to try inside Pacific Place, should you want entertainment beyond Island Shangri-La’s walls.
  • We’re easily won over by hotels that offer small little touches to make you feel more at home, like the local beers stocked in the mini-bars in the rooms.
Things to Know
  • Island Shangri-La is one of two Shangri-La hotels in Hong Kong. The other is the Four-Star Kowloon Shangri-La, and it is located in the East Tsim Tsa Shui neighborhood on the opposite side of the harbor from Island Shangri-La.
  • Restaurant Petrus is one of Hong Kong's most special and romantic restaurants. The formal dining room is located on the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel's 56th floor and has incredible views to go along with its refined French food and attentive service.
  • Island Shangri-La is not really walking distance to anything aside from the Admiralty MTR stop, shopping at Pacific Place and Hong Kong Park, but taxis and the MTR will get you where you need to go in a snap.
  • That alluring fragrance you'll notice the minute you walk through Island Shangri-La's door can be found throughout all Shangri-La hotel — it's a signature white tea concoction that can be purchased in the gift store and brought home if you're a fan.
  • Though formal and sophisticated, Island Shangri-La's friendly, accommodating staff makes you feel at home. So while the rooms are filled with gorgeous, Chinese antiques, and there are plenty of chandeliers to be found throughout the space, you still feel like you can kick back and relax.
The Rooms
  • With some of the largest rooms in Hong Kong, where space is always at a premium, Island Shangri-La also has some of the grandest and most traditional. The Four-Star hotel's guest rooms are decorated in a style that’s a mix of formal European with Asian accents, including lacquered cabinets and ornate silks.
  • Every room has a crystal chandelier as its focal point, which sets the tone for a grand and formal stay. Beyond the comfortable, duvet-topped beds, there are two arm chairs and an oversized work desk.
  • The space is ample for two people, but if you are bringing the family, consider booking a suite or even a suite connected to a standard guest room.
  • Return to your room at the end of the day and you'll find that Island Shangri-La's housekeeping staff has set the mood for serious slumber. The heavy silk curtains will be drawn (though you may want to leave them open to have a peak at the city lights that surround this centrally-located skyscraper hotel), the bed turned down and the lights dimmed.
  • Small touches make every guest feel at home, such as the Shangri-La bookmarks thoughtfully placed in reading materials you leave in your room.
The Look
  • Island Shangri-La’s design is a mix of colonial formality with Asian antiquities that combine to deliver richness and sophistication. The Four-Star hotel's lobby’s large-scale chandeliers are just a few of the 771 chandeliers found throughout the hotel (including one in each guest room).
  • The dramatic blue-carpeted white marble staircase that climbs to a spacious mezzanine sets the tone for this grand hotel, as does the magnificent Chinese silk painting “The Great Motherland of China,” which hangs 16 stories down to the atrium and can be seen as you ride the glass elevators up to the guest rooms.
  • And those rooms are grand, with rich silks, lacquered Chinese cabinets and spacious bathrooms. Perhaps the most impressive spot in the entire hotel is the 56th-floor Restaurant Petrus, a beautiful space with gilt-covered everything, plenty of its own chandeliers, and some of Island’s best views.
