The 29-story Athenee Hotel, A Luxury Collection Hotel stands on the grounds of the former Kandhavas Palace, the royal residence of Princess Valaya Alongkorn, the aunt of Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Against this royal backstory, The Athenee joined the Luxury Collection in 2017 and was spruced up to give off a decidedly early 20th-century European flair with perceptible Thai influences.

The 374 rooms and suites offer a level of refinement that draws inspiration from Princess Valaya’s palace with opulent furnishings that incorporate elements of local culture and royal heritage. Accommodations also come with the latest technology, such as a 48-inch LED TV, Bluetooth audio and one-touch lighting — providing a juxtaposition between past and present.

The property’s location on Bangkok’s Wireless Road could not be more convenient. The Athenee counts several embassies and offices of multinational companies as its neighbors, while the gleaming Central Embassy shopping mall and the BTS Skytrain are just a short stroll away.

Our Inspector's Highlights

The outdoor pool area is an excellent place to watch the sunset. On clear days, you can see the sky turning pink over the horizon as the pool gives off a reflection of Bangkok’s gleaming skyscrapers as they start to light up.
The hotel’s namesake spa is not to be missed. A signature massage is customized according to your blood type, using specific oils, herbs and stones to boost immunity and induce relaxation.
Dining options abound with no less than eight venues in which to indulge. The Reflexions, a modern French restaurant, offers a sensational Saturday Social Lunch, and Smooth Curry serves excellent Thai cuisine.
The concierge team here is unlike any other. Each member proudly wears the Les Clefs d'Or insignia and always stands ready with one or two Bangkok secrets to share — from making reservations in one of the city’s top restaurants to deciphering the location of an eatery whose name only exists in Thai.
A Royal Club Room is worth the splurge. You’ll enjoy late checkout among other perks, including complimentary suit pressing and breakfast.

Things to Know

The Bangkok hotel’s Wireless Road location makes it popular with weekday business travelers, which means it’s a great spot for a weekend stay. You’ll also avoid traffic jams and crowds, should you choose to visit on a holiday.
Avoid the long taxi queue at the airport by opting for the hotel’s limousine transfer service. The well-appointed BMW 730 comes with complimentary bottles of water, towels and even Wi-Fi.
Optional butler service can be arranged. Your personal attendant can handle everything from delivering coffee to your room each morning, with newspaper in hand, to assisting in the packing and unpacking of luggage.
This is one of the exceedingly few pet-friendly luxury hotels in Bangkok.

The Rooms

Popular among visiting dignitaries, the five themed suites offer unrivaled levels of opulence with exquisite silks and floor-to-ceiling paintings. The décor ranges in style from 10th-century Khmer to 19th-century Euro-inspired Thai.
The largest room in the house, the Ratanakosin Suite provides 3,700 square feet complete with two bedrooms and its own gym.
Luxurious marble bathrooms feature large soaking tubs and sumptuous Thann amenities, including bath salts and oils.
For a little extra space, opt for the corner Athenee Prestige rooms. For a nominal price increase over the basic accommodations, you’ll enjoy an extra 86 square feet of space flooded with natural light from additional windows.

The Restaurants

The House of Smooth Curry, the in-house Thai restaurant, is helmed by chef Montri Jiratitkankit, who has cooked for members of the Thai royal family. Authentic Thai cuisine from the country's four regions (with a focus on recipes from royal palaces and residences) is served here. The menu is 80 percent organic, using sustainable produce from local farmers and ingredients that are considered rare and not easily available.
The Allium Bangkok’s modern French cuisine showcases an exciting menu taking inspiration from chef Roxanne Lange’s travels. Only the finest ingredients are sourced with half of the land-based produce coming directly from local organic Thai growers.
Taking on classical Japanese Kaiseki cuisine and focusing on ingredients sourced from Western Japan, Kintsugi Bangkok by Jeff Ramsey combines these attributes with local produce to take the cuisine into new directions while remaining true to its ancient tradition.
Chef Cheng Kam Sing describes the cuisine at The Silk Road as classic Cantonese with a modern flair, for the mostly shareable dishes are rooted in age-old traditions yet inspired by modern interpretations and cooking techniques.
The Glaz Bar promises chilled-out evenings with soothing entertainment and a selection of exotic cocktails and light snacks.
The View, located on the poolside terrace, is ideal for light meals, fresh juices and signature cocktails.
