The Sanchaya

A sophisticated South Asian island escape
VERIFIED LUXURY
A 50-minute ferry ride from Singapore lands you in another world: The Sanchaya on Bintan Island. Among 24 beachfront acres, just 30 suites and villas hide beneath towering palms.

Here, Southeast Asian craftsmanship is layered with colonial European influences: crisp black-and-white interiors softened by bamboo accents, Indonesian antiques and curated objets d’art lending warmth to the modern architecture.

Mornings begin with coffee on your veranda. A notably high staff-to-guest ratio keeps the rhythm of the day effortless, whether you’re floating in the oceanfront infinity pool, retreating to the spa or venturing into the surrounding rainforest. Come evening, visit the colonial-era structure near the main house for an atmospheric wine cellar, housing thousands of bottles for sommelier-led tastings.

The Sanchaya is kid-friendly. Families can partake in archery lessons, cooking classes, bike rides, padel and croquet, while beach toys and coloring books are readily available to keep little ones entertained.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • At the far end of the beach, the four-bedroom Vanda Villa offers a buffer from foot traffic and communal areas. That extra privacy is the main draw, along with its own ocean-facing infinity pool, a sweeping second-floor veranda and direct beach access.
  • You will want to spend time at the private beach, whether to lounge on the daybeds and relax, take to the calm waters for stand-up paddleboarding or go Blokarting (a three-wheeled kart used for land sailing) on the sands. An enticing 50-meter oceanfront pool offers another alternative.
  • The Dining Room anchors the main house with Indonesian-European menus served in a warm, elegant setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For something more casual, open-air Tasanee Grill sits next to the pool, focusing on Thai flavors.
  • Tucked into the tropical greenery, the spa specializes in Indonesian techniques, including deep-pressure Balinese massage and rhythmic stretching designed to improve circulation. If you want to take your pampering outside, try the open-air pavilions for Thai massages and reflexology.
  • The Sanchaya makes traveling seamless. The Bintan hotel has its own lounge with refreshments at the ferry terminal, and it provides VIP fast-track immigration service.

The Rooms

  • Most accommodations face the South China Sea, with ground-floor options opening directly onto manicured lawns or sand.
  • Villas come with private pools and shaded verandas designed for leisurely afternoons. Interiors favor symmetry and restraint, with dark woods, monochrome palettes and thoughtfully placed antiques.
  • If the plush Ploh bed and Egyptian cotton linens aren’t enough to lull you to sleep, peruse the pillow menu.
  • The generously sized bathrooms feature Lefroy Brooks clawfoot tubs and walk-in rain showers, double vanities and high-quality Aesop toiletries.
  • You will enjoy movie nights in your room with Bang & Olufsen TVs and sound systems, Apple TV and a complimentary “maxi-bar” loaded with snacks and drinks. Request a mixology kit to shake up some cocktails or pick a selection from your sommelier-curated wine cabinet.
