Prestonfield House Edinburgh

Luxurious rooms to fit any mood
VERIFIED LUXURY

Tuck into the Prestonfield House Edinburgh, a boutique property that looks as if it could have served as a setting in a Jane Austen novel. Each room boosts beautiful antiques, rich brocade fabrics, textured wall paper, soft lighting and bespoke furniture. Even the 20 acres of surrounding land offer surprises at every turn, be it with a beautiful statue, an 18-hole golf course or the elegant topiary.

The grand house was built in 1687, designed for Sir James Dick by the king's personal architect, Sir William Bruce. That's when the property garnered the name Prestonfield, a take on the original moniker, Priestfield.

A lot of the original furnishings deck the hotel’s historic public areas, including the Leather Room, Yellow Room, Tapestry Room and Whisky Room, an aptly named space where you can indeed indulge in a fine glass of scotch.

From these unique rooms and the exquisite suites to the well-stocked dining room to the luscious gardens, you could wander the luxury hotel and natural spaces for days, taking it all in without ever leaving the grounds.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • In the middle of Edinburgh, Prestonfield House sits on verdant lands filled with gardens, animals and walking paths. Take it all in with a glass of wine at the Tapestry Room Terrace, which overlooks the entrance to the gardens.
  • Seek out the Chinoiserie lacquer cabinets and portrait of red-robed Sir William Dick, Sir James’ grandfather. Both pieces have been in Prestonfield House since the late 1600s.
  • The most opulent room in this Scottish hotel is the Owners Suite, a lavishly decorated chamber featuring a four-poster bed decorated with ostrich plums, a separate seating room, a view of the ruins of Craigmillar castle and the gardens, a book-lined bathroom and a private stone staircase that leads into the space.
  • Keep on the lookout for Prestonfield House’s peacocks that wander the grounds when the weather is mild.
  • By trying some scotch in the Whisky Room you’ll get your dose of Scottish heritage both in the glass and on the walls.

Things to Know

  • Each booking includes a welcome bottle of champagne and daily breakfast at the property's restaurant, Rhubarb.
  • Reserve one of the hotel's Range Rovers and explore nearby attractions: Holyrood Park, located right next to the property, features dramatic hills and crags to wander around; Arthur’s Seat offers a 360-degree view of Edinburgh; and St. Anthony's Chapel is a medieval ruin worth visiting.
  • Famous guests of note include Lauren Bacall, the Dalai Lama, Elton John and Sean Connery.
  • In the mid 1700s, Alexander Cunyngham inherited the estate and decided to bring rhubarb to Scotland. It proved a successful crop that's still grown on property and the reason behind the Edinburgh hotel restaurant's name.

The Rooms

  • Expect a plush bed draped with fine linens and velvet comforters with enough pillows piled on to make a whole other bed, if you so wished.
  • Bathrooms at the Prestonfield House don't skimp on décor either. Each is lined with Venetian glass, marble mosaics, deep tubs and a vanity basin.
  • There are 18 standard rooms and five suites that include their own uniquely decorated sitting room.

The Restaurants

  • Rhubarb is the main dining establishment in Prestonfield House. It’s the culinary concoction of James Thomson, the mastermind behind another popular Scottish restaurant, The Witchery.
  • Lunch and dinner services at Rhubarb feature à la carte meals or three-course prix fixe arrangements. Each list features an array of Scottish foods such as slow-cooked ox cheek with bone marrow mash, Tweeddale Scotch lamb, roast beef and oxtail pie, and truffle-laced winter endives.
  • Afternoon tea is served daily. And depending on the weather, you can sip and sample from the rose garden or the gothic tea house.
