Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel
Boasting a classic belle epoque facade reminiscent of an elaborate wedding cake, Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel has been a staple of the Mediterranean waterfront for more than a century. So when the 1913 hotel began its years-long refurbishment, the endeavor was the talk of the town. When it reopened in 2023, the jaw-dropping results spoke for themselves.
The grande dame’s footprint expanded to include two new wings of bookable residences with living rooms and kitchens, a wellness complex and events facilities, all without damaging the protected historical monument’s integrity. A team of 750 French artisans was tasked with restoring the Carlton’s storied interiors, including gilders from the acclaimed Ateliers Gohard and master craftsmen from the Mathieu Lustrerie workshop — the same studio that maintains the chandeliers at the Palace of Versailles.
Undertaken with care and precision, the massive restoration project was a resounding success that has reestablished Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel as the French Riviera masterpiece it is.
- Among the newest additions to Carlton Cannes is a gorgeous landscaped courtyard garden with roughly 22,000 flowers and plants. Tucked inside the lush oasis is Cannes’ largest infinity pool, complete with cabanas and Riviera-inspired loungers.
- Below the historic hotel is another brand-new feature: a wellness complex dubbed Le C Club. The 900-square-foot facility offers a marble-clad spa, a full-size boxing ring (the first of its kind in Cannes) inaugurated by Mike Tyson, and a yoga and Pilates studio.

- Lunch at the Carlton Beach Club is a must, where light Italian favorites and no less than five types of spritzes are on offer. Riviera Restaurant by contrast is a white-tablecloth affair featuring Mediterranean brasserie-inspired fare and trendy Rüya offers up a modern take on Anatolian cuisine.
- The Cannes hotel transformed its lobby into something new, courtesy of interior designer Tristan Auer and Cannes-based architect Richard Lavelle. The soaring lobby is drenched in natural light, while newly raised ceilings, restored white stucco columns and rows of shimmering chandeliers keep the space feeling open and airy.
- The entire hotel benefits from a French-garden-inspired color palette of rose pink, pale green and light gray that toes the line between Old World grandeur and modern taste.
- Don’t miss the chance to explore the historic hotel’s opulent Grand Salon. Refinished by the same artisans who maintain the Palace of Versailles, the rich space includes rose-hued marble columns with gilded caps, immense gold and Murano glass chandeliers and intricately frescoed ceilings.
- In a unique homage to classic clay tennis courts that originated in Cannes, the lounge’s tables and lobby reception desk all contain bits of court clay embedded in their glass and resin-topped surfaces. Burnt sienna-toned headboards in the refreshed accommodations add another tie-in to the city’s storied history with the sport.
- The historic hotel’s renovation strikes a beautiful balance between restoration and refurbishment. The property’s original central hexagon-shaped staircase, for example, benefits from newly applied gold leaf details that allow the 1913-installed brass banisters to really shine.
