Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Belle époque romance in Lake Como
VERIFIED LUXURY

Grand Hotel Tremezzo stands boldly on the western shore of Lake Como overlooking blue waters that stretch out toward the town of Bellagio and the Grigne mountains.

Opened as a luxury hotel in 1910 by Enea Gandola and his wife, Maria Orsolini, for the social elite of the belle époque era, it remains a family-run business and maintains its charm and elegance.

An astute businesswoman, Orsolini was considered audacious for insisting on having electric elevators, central heating and a bathroom in every room, thus setting a new standard for luxury hospitality in the region. Her daring spirit and high expectations live on in the blend of classic and contemporary décor and personalized service of the property’s 90 rooms and suites, two private villas and five restaurants.

Quintessentially Italian, this Lake Como lodging flaunts its heritage by featuring luscious Como silk, restorations by local artisans and the preservation of an immense botanical park and garden.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Grand Hotel Tremezzo expresses its Italianità (Italian spirit) by using as many local products as possible, from the skincare brands at T Spa and leisure couture on display at the gift shop to the exclusive Aqua di Como bath line in the rooms and Italian-only vino list served at L’Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar.
  • While the enchanting Flowers Pool in the garden and the spa’s infinity pool are both serene options for a swim, the highlight here is the WOW (Water-on-the-Water) pool. Situated on Lake Como, the floating oasis offers uninterrupted mountain views from the comfort of the azure waters.
  • Grand Hotel Tremezzo is all about romance. Simply ask and the staff will help you plan a marriage proposal, a boat cruise for two or a day of indulgence at the couples-only day spa.
  • Take a snapshot in front of Fontana della Felicita (“The Fountain of Happiness”), a mosaic-tiled cascade by Italian architect Ico Parisi found at the entrance of the hotel’s 215-square-foot park. Legend says that if you get your picture in front of the water feature, you will be happy forever.
  • Make time for a stroll through the grounds. The luxury hotel is set within one of Lake Como’s largest private botanical gardens, home to rare and tropical flowers, olive groves and picture-perfect panoramas.

Things to Know

  • Grand Hotel Tremezzo closes each winter (from mid-November to late March/early April) for refurbishing. The yearly refresh keeps the property looking as good as new.
  • Arrive in style, either by motorboat at the hotel’s private pier or by air — the helipad is a 10-minute drive away.
  • Get a private lake tour aboard one of the hotel’s water limousines, upscale versions of Venetian water taxis.
  • Children are welcome. There is a Kids’ Club, daily activities, children's robes and special in-room amenities.
  • This Lake Como hotel is dog-friendly and even offers a pet menu at its restaurants, though Fido will have to enjoy his feast back in the room.

The Rooms

  • All rooms and suites have sophisticated interior design. Some, like the rooftop penthouse, are more contemporary than others, but all afford mesmerizing lake or garden views.
  • Named for actress and hotel guest Greta Garbo (who referred to the property as “that sunny, happy place” in the 1932 film Grand Hotel), Suite Greta has a luxurious lakefront terrace and a palatial marble bathroom with a circular Jacuzzi.
  • All rooms feature stellar vistas, but Rooftop Corner Suites up the ante with a bathtub overlooking the lake and its own terrace with a massive whirlpool.
  • In addition to extra space to stretch out, rooftop suites come with butler service and a personal concierge to help you plan out your trip.
  • Silky linens made of a natural Norwegian birch fiber weave, a 15-inch cloudy mattress and a feather mat are the secret to Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s signature Dream Sleep combination.

Nearby Attractions

  • Next door is Villa Carlotta, an 18th-century mansion-turned-museum with Italian artwork by 18th-century sculptors, like Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen, and 19th-century painters, including Giovanni Migliara and Francesco Hayez. Don’t miss a stroll through the 20-acre botanical garden.
  • The charming villages of Bellagio and Varenna are just a short ferry ride away.
  • If Villa del Balbianello looks familiar, it might be because this the stately home was featured in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale and Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. The villa is now a museum showcasing the lavish lifestyle of 18th-century Lake Como residents.
  • For gorgeous views and a great workout, hike the Greenway Lake Como, a pleasant six-mile trail passing through the lakeside towns and villages.
