Montage Healdsburg

A wine country retreat among the vines
VERIFIED LUXURY

Ensconced among the vineyards in Sonoma, Montage Healdsburg immerses you in wine country. The best place to soak it all in is the expansive terrace at its restaurant and bar, where you can gaze at Mount St. Helena and the rolling vine-dotted hills of the Mayacamas Mountains — preferably with a local pour in hand.

The hotel, which debuted in January 2021, seamlessly blends into the landscape, with its 130 rooms tucked into bungalows that bear the same shade of brown as the heritage oaks that cloak them. The accommodations feel secluded and spread out. Inside the rooms, mixed wood, local stone and copper throughout the space lend an earthy feel.

It will be tempting to spend all of your time in the 11-treatment-room spa. And while you should certainly pamper yourself, the outdoors beckon with hotel offerings like a yoga lawn among the vines, an archery range, pickleball courts, bike and e-bike rentals, bocce ball and two glistening pools overlooking the vineyards.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Wine lovers should flock to Montage Healdsburg. The hotel sets up tastings at coveted local wineries, serves great pours at its restaurants and bar, and most importantly, it has its own 15.5-acre vineyard overseen by respected winemaker Jesse Katz of nearby Aperture Cellars.
  • Hazel Hill delivers upscale French-tinged California cuisine along with captivating views from its patio.
  • Rejuvenate at the 11,500-square-foot spa. The Elements of Wellness menu, in particular, helps you find balance with treatments like Pure Bliss, which includes an exfoliation, a hydrating milk wrap, a neck and shoulder rub and a therapeutic full-body massage.
  • Be sure to get a room with an outdoor fire pit. Sitting on a terrace with a glass of wine while cozying up to the flames is a singular Sonoma experience.
  • Sprawling across 258 acres, Montage Healdsburg is just the escape when you need a dose of nature. The rustic setting showcases everything from vines to rolling hills.

Things to Know

  • Montage Healdsburg’s fleet of Cadillacs can chauffeur you to the Healdsburg Plaza. Or inquire about the complimentary Ride and Drive program, which allows you to borrow a Cadillac and do your own exploring in Sonoma.
  • The family-friendly hotel offers Paintbox, a hands-on club that caters to ages five to 12 with half- or full-day activities.
  • Dogs are welcome with beds, treats and their own gourmet room service menu. The hotel has a canine resident, Beau, a darling Lagotto Romagnolo pup who is learning to truffle hunt among the property’s 1.5 acres of hazelnut trees.

The Rooms

  • Rooms glean design inspiration from the oaks, manzanita trees and vines outside. Art pieces feature cast bark from the property’s trees and barren twisted branches hang above the tub.
  • Accommodations are indoor-outdoor spaces. Each one has floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto a balcony with vistas of the vineyards, forest or mountains.
  • Marble bathrooms have deep-soaking standalone tubs and spacious showers, and many come with an outdoor shower as well. Clean brand Gloss Moderne supplies the toiletries, whose customized California-inspired scent carries notes of white jasmine, rose, local lemon, mandarin, bergamot and grapefruit.
  • The largest accommodation is the Guest House. Encompassing 4,600 square feet, it boasts three bedrooms (including a master suite), 3.5 bathrooms, a living room, a fully loaded kitchen, an alfresco hot tub and a wrap-around balcony peering out at Mount St. Helena and the valley.

The Restaurants

  • At Scout Field Bar, sit near the see-through lobby fireplace or head out to the terrace for local wine, craft beer or cocktails (like the Chickadee with Sipsmith gin, Lillet Rose, grapefruit, Rangpur lime, lemon verbena and Fever-Tree Mediterranean tonic). Then order bites like Pacific oysters with a refreshing Asian pear mignonette or farmstead cheeses and charcuterie.
  • The open kitchen at Hazel Hill uses local, seasonal ingredients to craft dishes like plump gnocchi with fava beans, morel mushrooms and white asparagus along with tender Liberty Farms duck breast with rhubarb, turnips and a sprinkle of pistachios.
  • Wedged between the hotel’s two pools, the seasonal Hudson Springs Bar and Grill cooks up barbecued oysters, crab rolls, burgers, salads and cocktails and delivers them to your cabana or lounger.
  • Pop into Healdsburg Country Store for grab-and-go fare, like flaky chocolate croissants, pistachio financiers with thick pistachio frosting, and coffee; bottles from area wineries like Jordan and Cep; and local foodstuffs that make nice souvenirs, like Volo chocolate bars (sample them at night; squares appear in your room as a turndown treat).
