Kulm Hotel St. Moritz

St. Moritz's alpine grand dame
VERIFIED LUXURY

If the phrase “winter wonderland” were a destination, St. Moritz would fit the description, and the historic Kulm Hotel St. Moritz would complete the scene.

Considered the birthplace of cold-weather sports, this tony Swiss ski resort has not only hosted the Winter Olympics twice (1928 and 1948) but is also home to the oldest and only remaining natural ice bobsled run in the world.

But it’s not all outdoor adventures here. The grand hotel instantly wows with its stately entry. Ornately adorned with richly patterned carpets, imposing columns and spectacular wood details depicting scenes of St. Moritz, the lobby offers just a taste of the extravagant extras to come.

A 21,000-square-foot spa invites endless opportunities for relaxation, seven sensational restaurants and bars offer mouthwatering morsels any time of day and sumptuous rooms (many with private balconies) beckon you to take in those panoramic mountain views without changing out of your robe.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Though its rich décor might make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, Kulm Hotel St. Moritz recently unveiled the largest room renovation in its 160-plus-year history. Led by renowned French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, the 2018 refresh revealed 40 modern accommodations adorned in locally sourced woods, jewel-toned accents and noise-reducing carpets for ultimate comfort.
  • Though this isn’t a ski-in, ski-out property, the luxurious St. Moritz hotel is perched right in the heart of town, putting you within arm’s reach of fabulous restaurants, boutiques and, of course, Swiss chocolate shops.
  • Don’t miss an après-ski dip in the spacious spa’s varied hydrotherapy offerings. A variety of saunas (including infrared, Finnish and a ladies-only bio-sauna), steam baths, a salt-water grotto, an indoor lap pool (complete with underwater tunes), a heated outdoor pool and Jacuzzi provide some prime pampering.
  • You’ll find no shortage of spots to dine at during your stay at Kulm Hotel, whether you’re in the mood for multi-course menus at Grand Restaurant, Sunday fondue at Chesa al Parc or Peruvian plates from the seasonal Sunny Bar by Claudia Canessa.
  • The staff at this historic Swiss resort is second-to-none, offering efficient and discreet service worthy of the property’s reputation. Ask the concierge to help you book any activity, from moonlight ski sessions to bobsled lessons or horse-drawn carriage rides.

Things to Know

  • Legend has it that a famous 1864 bet between hotel owner Johannes Badrutt and one of his English guests led to the introduction of winter tourism in the Swiss Alps. Badrutt wagered that if his guests came to visit Kulm Hotel St. Moritz in December and didn’t find it enchanting, he would refund all of their travel expenses — the guests stayed until Easter and alpine tourism was born.
  • This luxurious mountain resort provides picture-perfect views of the slopes, but doesn’t offer ski-in, ski-out service. However, a complimentary shuttle can easily whisk you to and from the funicular.
  • Kulm Hotel St. Moritz is a seasonal property, open from December to April for winter fun and from late June to September for summer sunshine.
  • A spacious fitness center outfitted with Technogym equipment delivers gorgeous alpine views through floor-to-ceiling windows. For a more intense workout, opt for a personal training session — new Pilates reformer classes are just the trick for toning trouble spots.
  • Traveling with tykes too young to ski? The luxury lodge offers a gratis kids' club and childcare services so you can hit the slopes without worrying.

The Rooms

  • Each of the luxury St. Moritz hotel’s 150 rooms and suites features a distinct style. Some offer the sumptuous feel of the property’s 19th-century roots, while others provide a more modern take with light pine wood paneling and a neutral palette with pops of color.
  • Splurge for a Lakefront accommodation to wake to spectacular waterfront vistas with the mountains as an impressive backdrop. Book a Deluxe room or suite to enjoy those views from your own private balcony.
  • 40 of the property’s Deluxe Rooms recently received a facelift from Rochon. Opt for one of the refreshed units to bask in alpine-modern design, a comfortable loft-style layout and reimagined onyx- and gold-accented bathrooms.
  • Regardless of your room’s décor, you’ll find that comfort is king at this St. Moritz hotel, where down duvets, pillow menus, bathtubs, Nespresso coffee machines and heavy curtains come standard.

The Restaurants

  • This winter, The K by Mauro Colagreco brings the acclaimed chef’s fresh Mediterranean fare to the luxury hotel. Savor dishes like “Green,” garden peas, fennel and kiwi fruit, as well as luxus beta vulgaris, a signature that combines salt-encrusted beetroot with indulgent Oscietra caviar cream.

  • Thanks to a 2017 renovation, the historic Kulm Country Club still boasts a charming ambiance but with a more contemporary finish. Dine on Italian-Mediterranean cuisine from chef Daniel Müller in either the wood-paneled dining room or out on the sun terrace.
  • The aptly named Grand Restaurant is a see-and-be-seen spot for six-course dinner affairs and extensive buffet breakfasts. Rich red accents, white tablecloths and sparkling chandeliers harken back to the hotel’s 1864 debut.
  • Don’t miss the resort’s seasonal eateries, including the cozy Chesa al Parc (stop by for a light lunch or sumptuous Sunday fondue), Sunny Bar by Claudia Canessa (savor fresh ceviche and Peruvian street food) and the historic Bob Restaurant (find it inside the starting gate of the St. Moritz-Celerina Olympia Bob Run).
