Bahia Vik José Ignacio

José Ignacio’s artistic retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY

A glance at the guest book in Bahia Vik José Ignacio's lobby offers a quick preview of what to expect. Guests’ lovely words dot the pages, singing the praises of this luxury hotel’s oceanfront locale, secluded bungalows and every amenity you could want.

Tucked away in Uruguay’s exclusive enclave of José Ignacio, Bahia Vik is unbelievably chic and eco-friendly to boot. Beach views abound from almost every angle, and the gentle surf makes the water enticing for leisure-seekers. Ten acres of secluded countryside provide endless possibilities for the active set.

And the water vistas aren’t the only things to gaze at here; this hotel also emulates an Uruguayan museum, with murals on every wall, exclusive furnishings and eccentric objects (including an amethyst sink), thanks to art-loving owner Alexander Vik himself.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Bahia Vik is a gallery in itself. Every room (and bathroom) was uniquely designed by a different artist. Each of the 37 accommodations is named for its creator (such as the feminine Rita or the Technicolor Lopez Laje), promising a stylish stay no matter how many times you visit.
  • Coming to Bahia Vik is like checking into an expansive resort. In addition to your artistic retreat, you can enjoy all the facilities on offer at José Ignacio’s other two Vik hotels: contemporary beachfront Playa Vik and the equestrian-focused Estancia Vik.
  • The term “waterfront” can sometimes seem like a stretch, but not so at this Punta del Este hotel. Ocean-view rooms and bungalows face the sea head-on, with the waves practically lapping at your feet.
  • Four pools, including an adults-only option and a family-friendly swimming hole, provide endless fun in the sun, but the beach is also just a few feet away.
  • The Shack Yoga & Wellness, the hotel's wellness center, offers private and group retreats that combine wellness activities with sightseeing and experiences around Jose Ignacio.

Things to Know

  • Bahia Vik is open seasonally from October to late April.
  • Due to Uruguay’s south-of-the-equator locale, the seasons are opposite of what you’ll find the Northern Hemisphere. If you plan on visiting Bahia Vik during the summer, take into account that for high season (December 20 through January 5), bookings are usually made up to one year in advance.
  • Tranquility has a price, and transportation to this resort town can sometimes be an issue. If you plan on exploring much beyond the secluded hotel, you’ll want to rent a car, otherwise grab a cab or an Uber from the airport and then embrace your vehicle-free vacation.
  • The spa is intimate with a short menu of services. It’s a great spot for a muscle-melting massage, but don’t expect extensive facilities or trendy treatments.
  • Even though the bungalows are spread out, each has multiple rooms, meaning that privacy can be an issue if you don’t rent out the whole building. Patios are separated by screens, but all face the pool, so you’ll see other bathers out and about while relaxing outdoors.

The Rooms

  • The Uruguay hotel offers 37 suites, 10 of which are in the main building and the rest are sprinkled among the 11 bungalows across the property.
  • Every room sports one-of-a-kind works from the local artist who designed it. But what all the spaces have in common is stunning beach and countryside views.
  • With more than 480 square feet of space and large windows or sliding doors, the accommodations are bright and airy. The ability to adjoin rooms or rent out a whole bungalow makes this property convenient for multi-generational or group travel.
  • Though each bathroom is also uniquely designed, all come with deep-soaking tubs, so you can unwind in style.
  • If you’re feeling peckish, grab a gratis snack from the mini-fridge in your room.

The Restaurants

  • In keeping with resort’s artistic theme, its Zodíaco restaurant boasts an impressive mural featuring the 12 signs of the zodiac by Carlos Muzzo.
  • This contemporary bistro churns out casual bites to enjoy by the pool during the day and a more formal menu by night. The evening selections change with the seasons to make the most of the region’s varied bounty, much of which is sourced from the resort’s sister property, Estancia Vik.
