The Tides Inn

Classic luxury along Virginia’s coast
VERIFIED LUXURY

There may not be a better way to fully embrace Virginia’s storybook coastline than with a stay at Chesapeake Bay’s the Tides Inn. Like something out of a James Michener novel, the picture-perfect property that has welcomed visitors to its own peninsula since 1947 could not be more scenic. Though, with a 2020 resort refresh that ramped up the nautically inspired décor in rooms, added four suites and generally gave public spaces new splashes of life, it certainly tried.

The Tides Inn’s waterfront whim is only topped by a guests-first philosophy that the staff has long held. Onsite specialists lead nature tours and teach you everything there is to know about the local ecosystem. A mindfulness expert conducts wellbeing retreats and local winemakers host tasting events. But when it’s time to unwind with a quiet sunset along the bay, hotel workers also know when to leave you alone with your thoughts.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Though all 70 guest rooms and suites have a subtle maritime aesthetic, Tides Inn’s four all-new Ashburn Suites offer a sea of blue-hued fabrics, rich mahoganies, spacious living areas and stunning bay views.
  • At The Spa at The Tides Inn, you’ll not only exhale during your 60-minute Be Well scrub or 90-minute Tailored To You massage, but you’ll feel great knowing that a portion of the proceeds from your Rappahannock Renewal body treatment will go to maintaining the local waterways.
  • This part of Virginia is beloved for its seafood. Sample Rappahannock oysters at the signature Chesapeake Restaurant & Terrace or try Atlantic salmon and blue crab at the new Fish Hawk Oyster Bar. With either option, you’ll have adorable outdoor spaces for partaking in a meal.
  • If you’re in the mood for an outdoor activity, the Tides Inn provides plenty to do on land (bocce ball, croquet) or on water (kayaking, electric Duffy boats) during your stay.
  • Nearby Golden Eagle Golf Course is the resort’s 18-hole layout that hotel guests and local members can play.

Things to Know

  • Another renovation addition, the Maker Space is a spot dedicated to pottery classes, literary events and other creative pursuits all year long.
  • Many say they’re a pet friendly hotel, but at the Tides Inn, furry friends feel the love from the onset as they’re welcomed with beds, Maker Space-designed bowls and flashlights so their owners can take them on evening walks.
  • The Tides Inn sits right in the middle of Virginia’s Oyster Trail, so if you don’t get your fill of mollusks at Fish Hawk, sign up for a hands-on class at the onsite Virginia Oyster Academy.
  • Irvington, Virginia, is less than a three-hour drive from Washington, D.C., making the Northern Neck hotel an ideal destination for people needing an escape from the nation’s capital for a few days.
