While Jamaica might not be known as a shopping destination when compared to its Caribbean cousin St. Barts, for example, it still boasts a healthy collection of designer retailers. The airports and main tourist areas of Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios have duty-free shopping centers with jewelry boutiques from Patek Philippe, David Yurman, Chopard, Chanel, Cartier, Rolex, Breitling, Bulgari and TAG Heuer. For one-stop shopping, head to Time Square Mall in Negril; Shoppes at Rose Hall or Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay; and Taj Mahal Mall, Soni’s Plaza and Harbour Shops Plaza in Ocho Rios.
Each of these resort areas also features craft markets where you can buy a range of souvenirs, including shot glasses, wood carvings, and that sunhat you suddenly need after a long beach day. Many craftsmen will also personalize handmade items for you, engraving your name into carvings or sewing initials into a Jipijapa hat — a lightweight style that’s similar to a Panama hat. Buyers be warned — vendors might enthusiastically and sometimes aggressively pursue you in craft areas.
