Located just 22 miles from Los Angeles, Mt. Ada is situated on the laid-back, 76-square-mile island of Santa Catalina. A favorite weekend getaway for Angelenos, the bucolic island has been the site of some 500 film productions over the years. There’s plenty of history on Catalina, and including that of the vintage Mt. Ada. Built in 1921, the structure was the former home of William Wrigley Jr. (the man who founded the Wrigley chewing gum company). The island’s only city, Avalon, was named after Wrigley’s wife. The Georgian style building that houses the charming Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
