Located right on the beach in Santa Monica, Shutters on the Beach has a very residential beach theme imagined by Michael Smith (of Obama White House fame). Guests arrive at the hotel via a small, curved driveway, where the beach theme is immediately apparent. The low-slung gray- and white-shingled building has tall green shrubs surrounding it and yellow and white striped awnings. The driveway is paved in stone and attendants are in breezy jackets and slacks that fit the setting. The setting is almost more Cape Cod than Southern California. The lobby feels more like someone's grand beach house living room with homey furniture, natural wood tables topped with books, and framed photos of Santa Monica in decades past. Candles flicker in glass hurricanes that are often filled with sand and seashells, and a large fireplace is located near the entrance. Soft music plays in the background. Comfortable seating areas include soft couches, large coffee tables and thick area rugs. French doors on the far end of the lobby lead out to a beachfront patio and an American flag waves in the window.
