SoCal chic with dramatic Los Cabos views
115 Rooms / 46 Suites
Perhaps the most impressive thing about The Cape, A Thompson Hotel is the spectacular views from virtually every corner of this luxurious property just outside Cabo San Lucas. Vistas are visible from the sunken lobby bar, the infinity pool, the hip rooftop lounge, the acclaimed restaurant and every last one of the stylishly appointed rooms and suites.
With commanding views of Monuments Beach and its famed surf break, and the evocatively shaped 30-million-year-old granitic rock formations that mark the terminus of the Baja California peninsula as the backdrop, architect Javier Sánchez and designer Marisabel Gómez Vázquez’s hotel feels modern and bold but never eclipses its dramatic natural surroundings.
The rooms exemplify the hotel’s elegant approach to laid-back luxury and surfer-chic style. Graceful furnishings and appointments are interspersed with accents like copper bathtubs and swinging daybeds on the terrace.
Regional art curated in collaboration with celebrated ceramicist José Noé Suro shares space with vintage surf photographs from LeRoy Grannis, the punk portraiture of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, and artisanal liquors like the half-jokingly named Pelotón de la Muerte (Death Squad) mezcal.
Five corner rooms feature panoramic views of Land’s End — lest one have to shower without a view of the famous Arch.
Celebrated Mexican chef Enrique Olvera’s first restaurant in Los Cabos, Manta, adds luster and a certain marquee value to the Cabo San Lucas hotel, as well as to the local dining scene. The latest venture from the chef — his restaurant Pujol in Mexico City is regarded as among the top restaurants in the world — showcases a contemporary fusion of Mexican and Pacific Rim flavors, with the focus on fresh local seafood.
But even Olvera, is not above the views. Much of the interior space in Manta is black, so that the sunset views of Land’s End will pop for maximum visual appeal. Of course, the design scheme also serves his colorful presentations, which are served to great effect on gleaming white plates.
Manta is the signature draw, but hardly the only source of gustatory pleasures. The beachy-rustic Ledge, for example, offers daily breakfast buffets and lunch specials; and the aptly named Glassbox provides a world-class selection of premium tequilas, mezcals and cigars in an air-conditioned oasis.
The soundtrack of The Cape’s spa, Currents, is the sound of waves continually crashing upon the rocks at nearby Monuments Beach. It’s a feature both meditative and majestic, and along with the purposely austere treatment areas serves as a reflection of the hotel’s commitment to chic simplicity.
Forget gimmicky therapies or themed massages. Currents' focus is on traditional therapies done exceedingly well in an unforgettable natural setting. Two beachfront cabanas offer the ideal venue for romantic couples massages, with the requisite breathtaking views and sea-scented tropical breezes.
A sauna, steam room and hot and cold plunge pools are among the other health and wellness facilities, complementing the beauty salon and well-outfitted gym.
Enter the luxury hotel past a reflecting light wall, emerging into a long open lobby that includes comfortable seating areas with vintage style furnishings — The Cape’s unique aesthetic is meant to evoke a 1960s meeting of Mexico and Southern California — a pool table and a central sunken bar with one of Los Cabos finest collection of top-shelf liquors.
Meeting rooms and the 2,155-square-foot open-air event space Glimpse are other notable amenities, complementing upscale vacation comforts like an infinity pool, swim-up bar and salt water soak area.
Late-night views of Land’s End attract guests and local scene makers to The Rooftop lounge, a hip nightclub-like concept that blends DJs and live entertainment with craft beers and creative cocktails.
Surf rentals and apparel for those with expert-level skills (the infamous left-hand surf break at Monuments is not for beginners) can be arranged at the gift shop, and special surf-friendly accommodations are also available.
