Hotel Okura Macau

Macau's tranquil Japanese treasure
VERIFIED LUXURY

From the moment you step inside, Hotel Okura Macau welcomes you as a beacon of Japanese elegance among the bustle of the city’s glitzy gaming resorts.

The first Macau property from luxury Japanese brand Okura, the 488-room hotel provides a serene respite from the action found within the massive entertainment complex of Galaxy Macau.

The Okura is all about understated yet meaningful details, such as the graceful greeting by the kimono-clad ambassadors at the lobby, the kusamaki tree adjacent to the hotel’s main entrance, the serene and warm interior design or the unique turndown and amenities. White and pale gray guest rooms and suites are elegantly outfitted with wood elements, silk screens and minimalist artwork to create a tranquil retreat from the bustle of the gaming floors.

But the delights aren't just visual here. A trio of eateries ensures you can get a marvelous meal anytime of day, be it a multi-course Japanese menu or a seafood-packed bento box.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Hotel Okura was originally founded on the principle that its hotels must consistently offer the best accommodations and cuisine, and this maxim shows in all parts of Hotel Okura Macau — from the attentive service to the attention to detail in the hotel’s guest rooms and at its restaurants, including signature eatery Yamazato.
  • Personal touches are key at this luxury Macau hotel, from the personal welcome by traditionally dressed Kimono Ambassadors in the lobby to the handmade origami cranes left on your pillow every night.
  • One of the main draws to resort is the shared casino floor, which offers 600 gaming tables and 1,500 slot machines catering to everyone from the casual gamblers to the high-rolling players from mainland, Hong Kong and abroad.
  • The indoor pool area, complete with a Jacuzzi, looks out over the Macau skyline. Guests also have access to the Galaxy complex Grand Resort Deck, which offers a huge outdoor wave pool and enormous white sand beach.
Things to Know
  • The benefit of staying at the Galaxy complex — which is made up of the Galaxy Hotel, Hotel Okura Macau and Banyan Tree — is that you can easily experience the hustle and bustle of the complex’s many offerings, including the casino floor, shops, spa, restaurants and bars.
  • The Cotai strip is quickly becoming Macau’s entertainment center and guests can easily wander this area by foot.
  • If you want to access more cultural offerings — for instance, the old Portuguese town with the beautiful façade of St. Paul’s Church or the local Buddhist temples —you’ll need to take a short cab ride across the bridge to the Taipa side of the city.
The Rooms
  • From the moment guests set foot in any of Hotel Okura Macau’s 488 guest rooms, you’ll see the principles of minimalist Japanese design at work.
  • Accents like Japanese screens, bamboo-inspired hand-tufted rugs and warm soji-paper lighting are combined with design features like simple modern lines, light wood, silk and stone fixtures.
  • The inviting natural stone, glass and wood bathroom is one of the most spacious areas of the guest room, and the majority of bathrooms in the rooms integrate modern technology like 17-inch LCD TVs and include separate deep tub and rain shower.
  • Guests staying in the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel's suites get to try out the much-talked-about Japanese heated toilet as well as enjoy an in-room sauna, Jacuzzi and steam room. The Nespresso coffee machine is also a welcome addition for weary travelers.
The Restaurants
  • Yamazato, the signature restaurant of the hotel, serves authentic kaiseki ryori — a meal made up of a succession of courses that reflect the season — as well as freshly prepared sushi and the chef’s daily grill menu.
  • This seven-course menu recently included options like a chef’s selection of appetizers, a savory clear soup with crab dumplings, the freshest assorted sashimi (flown in multiple times a week from Japan), succulent grilled fish, simmered daikon, sweet sea-beam rice with read miso, and fresh fruit to end the meal and cleanse your palate.
  • The 6th-floor Terrace Restaurant offers its international menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The all-day dining venue specializes in seafood, so be sure to order up one of the impressive chilled seafood towers or the marisco bento box packed with mussels, cured salmon and other favorites.
  • The Nagomi Lobby Bar & Lounge serves a proper afternoon tea showcasing sweet treats from Japan and Macau.
