Crosby Street Hotel

British elegance in Soho
VERIFIED LUXURY
The stateside outpost of U.K.-based Tim and Kit Kemp’s Firmdale hotel group boasts the same eclectic English country-meets-modernist design as its London sisters (think layers of fabrics, textures and colors). Located on a cobblestone street in Soho, Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Crosby Street feels more residential than most hotels.

Crosby Bar is a colorful spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner, while the adjacent sculpture garden is a great spot for a drink. The cozy Drawing Room’s honor bar holds tea, snacks and buckets of wine on ice.

Guest rooms are uniquely decorated, with no two rooms alike, but include luxurious beds loaded with Frette linens and plush pillows that are almost too pretty to mess up. Bathrooms feature white marble, Miller Harris for Crosby Street amenities and towel warmers. The Meadow Suite includes its own private terrace and garden.

On Sunday nights, enjoy the Film Club, which takes place in the state-of-the-art theater with leather seats and a high-definition screen.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The Manhattan hotel’s premier location in the middle of Soho is one of its key attributes. Although it has many alluring features, the hotel would be worth visiting solely on location alone. Chain and boutique shops abound, all within a block or two of the hotel. Notable restaurants are also nearby, including the celebrated Balthazar.
  • The kitschy yet elegant interior design of the New York boutique hotel is stunning and memorable. From the Moroccan-themed hotel restaurant (The Crosby Bar & Terrace) to the modern artwork throughout, the Crosby Street Hotel feels like a museum, only cozier.
  • While the best guestroom views are offered in the top-floor suites, all the rooms feature stunning floor-to-ceiling warehouse-style windows with scenic views of lower Manhattan. In our room on the hotel’s eighth floor, the views of surrounding warehouses, rooftop gardens and busy streets made us feel like an integral, moving part of New York life.
  • The heart of the hotel’s social scene lies within The Crosby Bar & Terrace, a trendy and chic downtown spot favored by both visitors and locals. The hip bar and restaurant is open all day and offers fresh American cuisine, with a nod to the hotel’s British roots in its daily English Afternoon Tea.
  • One of the perks of staying at Crosby Street Hotel is having access to the private, guest-only areas. These include The Drawing Room, a 24-hour guest-only lounge that offers a quieter setting and more personalized service than the lively The Crosby Bar & Terrace. In addition to the restaurant courtyard, hotel guests can enjoy the secluded sculpture garden.

Things to Know
  • Each guestroom at this New York boutique hotel is uniquely designed by co-owner Kit Kemp. Our advice is to book a different room each stay to better soak in the varied and whimsical artwork and design style.
  • Try to book your stay over a Sunday to enjoy Crosby Street Hotel’s Sunday Night Film Club. While this feature is open to the public, you’ll be just steps away from the hotel’s sub-cellar cinema where a recently released movie plays on the big screen for your enjoyment.
  • The hotel is very eco-friendly, with a gold LEED-certification and a rooftop kitchen garden.
  • With a dog prominently featured as part of the hotel’s colorful logo, the hotel does welcome most pets.
The Rooms
  • Kemp’s unique eye for design focuses on whimsy and color, with a nod to the hotel’s elegant British roots in such details as the metal room keys and vintage books lining the back wall of the reception desk.
  • The boutique New York hotel’s 86 guestrooms feature high ceilings and warehouse-style windows that offer beautiful views of the surrounding Soho neighborhood and the rest of downtown Manhattan.
  • In addition to the many technological conveniences provided, which include a Tivoli radio and complimentary Wi-Fi, the guestrooms include plush robes and slippers, a spacious closet and uniquely stocked mini-bar. The wide writing desk ensures plenty of workspace, while the high, pillow-topped beds promise a sound night’s sleep.
  • The bathrooms in the rooms at Crosby Street Hotel are slightly more masculine in design than the brightly colored bedrooms, which feature floral patterns and whimsical lamps — instead, they’re covered in gray and white mottled granite.
  • A modern glass-enclosed shower has notably powerful water pressure from the multi-function shower head. A heated towel rack awaits you post-shower, and the Miller Harris bath products are luxurious and have a subtle herbal scent.
The Look
  • The New York hotel’s décor seamlessly blends a sense of British elegance in its wallpapered walls and library theme in The Drawing Room with an eclectic style in its mix of modern mirrored furnishings and unique artwork.
  • The art pieces range from framed dog-themed collages in the elevators to a steel sculpture of a human head comprised of alphabet letters, by Jaume Plensa.
  • Gray oak flooring and rough-hewn wood furnishings abound, accompanied by colorfully upholstered chairs and accent pillows. Moroccan side tables and other furnishings are also featured in the décor, most prominently in The Crosby Bar & Terrace.
