You’ll actually want to work out once you see the gym at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. Climb onto an elliptical to gaze at the blue, foamy Pacific Ocean out of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Go early enough, and you’ll see all the local surfers riding waves — it’s a much better alternative to television (though you’ll find them attached to the treadmills, too). The windows also give the small white space a bright, airy feel. And glass chandeliers add a touch of sophistication. Open 24 hours a day, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel’s gym is full of Precor and Icarian equipment, including treadmills, row machines, stationary bikes, weight machines and free weights. A mini-fridge is stocked with chilled bottles of water, and you’ll find plenty of towels and reading material like 944 and the Los Angeles Times.
If staring at the gorgeous ocean and makes you long to be outside, take your workout there. The Orange County hotel provides mats and blocks for its daily alfresco yoga and Pilates classes. Head to the gazebo for yoga at 9 a.m. and Pilates following at 10 a.m. to get a whiff of that salty air while you stretch. In the summer, the gym hosts a beach walk as well.
