- With white tablecloths, dark wooden chairs, leather banquettes and whimsically patterned upholstery, The Heathman Restaurant and Bar serves up its seasonal and ever-changing menu in a comfortable, sophisticated yet playful atmosphere. Here, executive chef Michael Stanton makes his renowned menu new each night, using only the freshest ingredients available.
- Just off the lobby at the hotel sits the traditional Tea Room, complete with wooden walls from the original building erected during the 1920s. Each afternoon, this grand room hosts a traditional English tea with an American twist, serving a range of teas alongside tea sandwiches and snacks.
- The art collection at The Heathman Hotel is second to none. The largest concentrated collections curated by the Elizabeth Leach Gallery sits next to the library on the mezzanine level, and an audio tour — available both online and via the hotel’s iPhone app — will walk you through the beautiful pieces within the property, both in the Mezzanine Gallery and other public spaces.
- While The Heathman Hotel doesn’t have a formal spa facility, it offers the convenience of in-room body, face and beauty treatments to all guests. Think aromatherapy facials and couples massages, a simple call to the concierge or tap on the iPhone app will get the booking process under way.
- Located on the Mezzanine level next to the hotel’s meeting and banquet facilities overlooking the grand Tea Room, the comfortable and impressive library is home to more than 2,000 books (many of the authors have even stayed at the hotel). Books range from Richard Russo’s Bridge of Sighs to a colorful guide to the Tuscany region of Italy, and plush armchairs are available beneath elegant gold moldings on the ceiling to settle in and relax.
Things to Know
- Advanced reservations are suggested for afternoon tea. In fact, reservations 48 hours or more in advanced are required for the public, and while as a hotel guest you may get some special treatment, it’s still wise to book ahead of time to ensure you get a spot.
- The hotel has many banquet halls and meeting facilities. And that may mean larger crowds at certain times.
- Cacao, the chocolate store in the lobby, should not be overlooked. Located just to the left of the front door on the corner of Salmon Street, Cacao is renowned for its premium chocolate, creamy “drink chocolate” for sipping and other dark chocolate products, and is a must-visit while staying at the hotel.
- The fitness center at The Heathman is small, but well-appointed. With Precor machines, including a recumbent bike, treadmill, elliptical and free motion weight machine, it will surely satisfy your need to stay in shape while away from home, but don’t expect an expansive variety of equipment.
- In lieu of formal spa facilities, treatments are offered in your guest room. And while this adds a sense of comfort and convenience to a luxurious massage, it also means the hotel forgoes having locker room features like a hot tub or steam room.
The Rooms
- The walls within guest rooms are painted a soothing pale yellow or green, and feature dark wood nightstands, marble-topped desk and modern surface lamps, as well as comfortable armchairs in elegant upholstery, leather headboards with ornate gold wall hangings above and an oversized full-length mirror with intricate gold detailing on the frame.
- The entryway to each room features dark marble flooring, to match that of the vanity area of the bathroom.
- In many of the standard Deluxe guest rooms — which begin at 260 to 360 square feet and range up to 600 square feet in the Renaissance suites — elegant art hung on guest room walls are by primarily Northwest and local artists, while the much larger signature suites like the Oregon Symphony Suite and the Portland Center Stage suite include décor paying homage to a specific cultural institution.
- Bathrooms within The Heathman Hotel guest rooms blend perfectly with the elegant yet comfortable style and vibe of the bedrooms. Immediately off the bedroom sits dark marble flooring beneath a brown marble vanity countertop, artistically designed rectangular white sink and large horizontal mirror.
- Behind a wood-framed opaque glass door you’ll find the water closet with a second sink, toilet and full-size shower tub. Fluffy white Lotus Luxury collection towels sit neatly rolled on black shelving, and a small red light fixture above the vanity adds a pop of playful color.

- The classic elegance of its historical roots shines through with gold accents, dark wood furniture and ornate upholstery, while playful additions such as a gray carpet with stripes of pastel blue, yellow and pink and a wall brightly painted with abstract birds and designs behind one reception desk add a bright, comfortable look.
