River House

A Lowcountry steakhouse
VERIFIED LUXURY

A modern steakhouse with a Southern slant, the newly renovated River House within Montage Palmetto Bluff is a distinctive dining destination that elevates Lowcountry cuisine to mouthwatering new heights.

Anchored by a classic dark wood bar and oversized fireplace, the restaurant is gorgeously flooded with natural light from recently added floor-to-ceiling windows that frame coastal South Carolina’s swaying palms and the May River. The moody steakhouse vibe beautifully contrasts with natural elements like wicker-backed barstools, light wood floors and more than 127 potted plants that elegantly bring the Lowcountry inside the old-school dining room.

The menu highlights the region’s coastal bounty, from locally sourced game and seafood to highly seasonal produce that might grace plates for as little as a few days before it disappears for the year. Enveloped in candlelight with a glass of bourbon in hand, you will step back in time in the best way during a meal here.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Every seat is a great one at River House. Sit by the windows to enjoy river views and stellar sunsets, belly up to the bar to admire the newly installed double-height beauty or snag a seat by the roaring fireplace for an extra cozy ambiance.
  • The Lowcountry restaurant’s menu is seafood-centric with a bevy of beef and other meat offerings to round it out. The venison tenderloin with huckleberry is a crowd favorite.
  • River House’s wine-focused bar menu boasts 2,500 labels from which to choose. And thanks to the Corvain pouring system, the venue offers more than 40 wines by the glass for those who don’t want to indulge in a whole bottle.
  • A well-curated cocktail menu focuses on unexpected concoctions, like a libation served with carrot juice ice cubes or one topped with a jasmine-scented bubble that, when popped, releases a flavor-boosting wave of aromatics to complement your beverage.
  • Those in the know can head down to Hush, River House’s wine-cellar-turned-speakeasy. The intimate 35-seat bar boasts a billiards table, live jazz and even a humidor and outdoor smoking space, all hidden behind a mirrored glass wall.

The Chef

  • Chef de cuisine Daniel Vesey helms the historic kitchen at River House, championing a locally inspired menu that changes with the seasons.
  • Vesey brings his background to the table at River House to palate-pleasing effect. From his mom’s love of baking to his memories of classic Chicago-style steakhouses to the inspiration he draws from Lowcountry waters, Vesey delightfully blends all these influences in his food.
  • Formerly the head toque at Montage Palmetto Bluff’s Octagon restaurant, Vesey has spent more than 20 years honing his skills in kitchens from his home state of Illinois to Hawaii, including a stint at Park City’s renowned Riverhorse on Main.
  • Between dinner shifts at River House, Vesey finds his groove playing guitar (he owns 15) in various bands as well as painting and sketching. He and his family hit the road as often as they can, visiting national parks in the Midwest and the beaches of Rio de Janeiro.
