Positivo Sand Bar

Asian excellence meets barefoot elegance
VERIFIED LUXURY

Boasting a premium sushi menu overlooking shimmering seas framed by swaying palms, Positivo Sand Bar wouldn’t feel out of place on the beaches of Osaka. Luckily for Puerto Rico travelers, this alfresco dining room is located on nearer shores within the confines of the luxurious Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve.

The whole venue exudes an air of barefoot luxury, from the sandy floors and canvas fans to the plentiful greenery sprouting around the edges of the restaurant. But an exclusive Omakase Bar and extensive seafood-focused menu with an Asian flair prove that it’s not all style over substance here. From the ultra-fresh crudo to the hand-rolled sushi, super-fresh seafood is the star, while sea breezes and ocean views make up a stellar supporting cast for an evening of tropical indulgence.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The intimate six-seat Omakase Bar is a coveted spot for savoring the best of Positivo Sand Bar’s seafood-focused offerings. Pull up a stool to enjoy the talents of chef Taira Tsuneyoshi as he crafts meticulous rolls using fresh ingredients sourced from Japan, New Zealand and Hawaii.
  • Toes-in-the-sand dining is always on offer at this Dorado Beach restaurant, but the best time to visit is just before sundown. Grab a seat facing the sea to sip on tropical cocktails and watch the sun dip below the horizon.
  • Vintage-inspired design details add to the air of casual elegance at this Asian-inspired spot. An intricately carved ceiling lets the sunlight shine through, while canvas fans help the subtle sea breezes flow through the space.
  • While sushi is certainly the star of the menu, cooked seafood specialties are equally as enticing. Opt for Indonesian-style sambal udang (spicy prawns), wok-fried Caribbean lobster with pickled chilies or Singaporean shrimp curry ramen.
  • Meat-free diners aren’t forgotten about at Positivo Sand Bar, either. A flavorful vegan menu features mouthwatering bites such as miso-glazed eggplant, papaya and tomato ceviche, and a Thai yellow curry packed with cauliflower and tofu.

The Drinks

  • Matching the Asia-meets-Caribbean vibe of Positivo’s food menu, the cocktail offerings infuse an Eastern flair into tropical tipples. Sip on a miso margarita enhanced with Chinese five spice or a refreshing gin-based beverage with sake and lychee puree.
  • A fairly traditional wine list focuses more on seafood-friendly sips like sparkling wines, dry chardonnays and crisp rosés. Of course, there are several bold reds to choose from should you prefer a classic pinot with your sushi.
  • Teetotalers won’t feel forgotten at this Dorado Beach dining room. A menu of zero-proof libations goes beyond the basic virgin daiquiri to include herb-infused teas sweetened with tropical flavors like pineapple juice or mango puree.
  • A robust list of Japanese whiskys adds an authentic touch to Positivo’s bar scene. One sip that’s worth the splurge is Osaka-based Kujira’s 20-year-aged Ryukyu, which is fermented with hyper-local black koji (fermented rice or soya bean) for a unique flavor.
