Riviera Maya's palatial, modern Mexican spa
42 Treatment Rooms
Traditional Mexican ingredients, advanced European techniques and ancient Asian therapies come together at SE by Grand Velas. This two-story, 90,000-square-foot space ventures beyond typical spa amenities to offer an intensive relaxing and rejuvenating experience.
Here, a natural rock wall and a serene stream provides idyllic relaxation inspiration, and extensive hydrotherapy amenities allow for complete indulgence before one of the many treatments on the spa menu.
The Water Journey
Known simply as the Water Journey, the hydrotherapy circuit at SE by Grand Velas is complimentary with each massage or treatment, allowing you to complement a spa experience through a series of steps that include different water experiences to revitalize the body. Divided into separate areas for men and women, the Water Journey takes you from the dry heat of the sauna through a color therapy steam room and on to a clay room and ice room.
A dip in the whirlpool and polar pool create a sense of relaxation then invigoration, while cozy loungers and a juice bar allow you to rest between steps.
Finally, the Experience Pool lives up to its name with plenty of elements to relax the muscles and the mind: massaging neck jets, water bubble beds, serene waterfalls, an exhilarating bubble volcano and a pebble walkway to soothe tired feet.
Aside from the stellar water hydro circuit, you can delight in the rest of the spa, too — from the flotation room and relaxation area to the luxe locker rooms and, spa boutique and salon.
While the spa facilites are certainly extravagant, the treatments themselves are every bit as luxurious. Typically ranging from 50 to 80 minutes, services include massages, body treatments and facials plus a few specialized therapies that combine all three (more on those later).
Couples can indulge in an aromatherapy massage and a dip in the spa suite’s private heated pool. A citrus-themed body wrap service aims to exfoliate the skin and then drench it in moisture; and one of the facial options involves using gold particles and vegetal stem cells to moisturize and tighten skin.
There’s also a lovely salon that offers traditional services like manis and pedis, haircuts and styles, makeup and men’s grooming.
The Harmony Therapies
For a spa treatment that goes beyond a traditional massage, each item on the Harmonizing Therapies menu combines a series of steps that promotes wellness to all areas of the body and mind.
The Flotation Ritual takes place inside a specially designed suite; here, a private pool infused with mineral salts allows for deep relaxation and effortless floating in order to awaken the mind and relieve stress. Next, a hot stone massage leads to an overall sense of wellbeing and serenity before the ritual concludes with a cup of cold tea and quiet meditation.
The Ayurvedic therapy known as Abhyanga and Shirodhara focuses on the seven chakras of the body by first opening the third eye through the soft, soothing fall of grape seed oil or green tea, complemented by a rhythmic and renovating massage. The 5th Element Therapy blends Thai massage and shiatsu acupressure to create the ideal balance of body synergy and promote energy flow. During the final option, a spa therapist guides you through the Nik Te Ha Aquatic Massage (named after a mythical Mayan princess whose name means “water flower”), a water immersion therapy created to alleviate stress, depression and fatigue.
The Mexico Collection
The Riviera Maya spa also draws inspiration from its surroundings, using essential ingredients from ancient Mexican civilizations like the Mayans and the Aztecs to develop a menu of treatments named Flavors and Traditions of Mexico. The Bacal Massage (Mayan for “corn on the cob”) starts with a corn and honey exfoliation then continues with a massage where essential oils are applied to the skin using corncobs.
The Úumbal Shawl Massage incorporates techniques used by pre-Hispanic Mayan women to align the body, applying pressure with lemons then stretching the body with traditional Mexican shawls. You can take advantage of the invigorating properties of the Coffee and Cocoa Experience, which activates circulation through a coffee exfoliation then renews and purifies the skin with a cocoa oil massage.
The Mayan Jade Facial helps to reduce lines and wrinkles, while the Aloe Vela Massage hydrates the skin to prolong your tan and prevent peeling, two calming ways to reduce the skin-altering effects of the sun while on your Riviera Maya beach vacation.
