The Lodge at Torrey Pines sits on a rocky cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by protected forest and unspoiled beaches.

The view is gorgeous, but many are drawn by another aspect of the location: the lodge neighbors the 18th hole of one of the world’s most acclaimed golf courses. Tee times are guaranteed for guests who want to try their hand at the championship course.

  • Most rooms come with a fireplace. SoCal nights can get a bit chilly and sitting in front of the roaring fireplace in the room in unbelievably comforting. Bonus: You can turn it on with the simple flip of a switch.

  • Sitting next to the 18th green at the Torrey Pines Golf Course and offering guaranteed tee times, the hotel is a perfect base for duffers who want to conquer the course that hosted the 2008 U.S. Open.
  • The La Jolla property is situated next to the area’s best park, Torrey Pines State Preserve. Hike the eight miles of trails or join one of the Four-Star hotel's twice-daily hour-and-a-half nature walks.
  • San Diego County’s only Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant, A.R. Valentien, is tucked inside The Lodge at Torrey Pines, as is the area’s only Four-Star spa.
Things to Know
  • The Four-Star hotel is an exact replica of the Gamble and Blacker houses in Pasadena, both of which are prime examples of Craftsman-style architecture by Greene & Greene.
  • The Torrey State Park, which is nestled right next to The Lodge, is home to the nation’s most rare pine tree, the Torrey pine, which is obviously the hotel’s namesake.
  • The Scripps Library is a cozy place to find some peace and quiet indoors with a pool table, big-screen TVs, book and board games.
The Rooms
  • Inside the wood-filled rooms, you’ll find Tiffany stained-glass table and floor lamps, an oversized burnt sienna Craftsman leather chair with a matching ottoman and a nice-sized writing desk with chair.
  • Cuddle up to the green-tiled gas fireplace (you can turn it on with the flip of a switch) or crawl under the light sage quilted duvet with a reddish-pink floral-like print.
  • The beautiful Stickley-style woodwork is a standout; the wooden bed frame and headboard are made without a single nail.
  • If you’re lucky enough to snag a room in the San Diego hotel with a balcony, the red-tiled terrace comes with wicker chairs and a marble-topped table.
The Restaurants
  • The hotel’s signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien — named for an early 1900s San Diego artist who created pottery, watercolors and oil paintings — also displays a collection of its namesake’s original works.
  • The small but formal A.R. Valentien dishes out farm-fresh cuisine with a menu that changes daily to make use of seasonal finds at local farmer’s markets and farms. Expect offerings like like prosciutto-wrapped sea bass with sugar snap peas, orange and roasted Tahitian squash.
  • To enjoy San Diego's gorgeous weather, opt to take your meal outside to A.R. Valentien’s patio. Sit on a wicker chair, warm up to one of the heat lamps, and nosh on dishes while enjoying a view of the pool, Torrey Pines Golf Course and ocean.
  • For a more casual dining alternative, and one that’s more kid-friendly, head to The Grill, which features the Craftsman look, with wood everywhere, your choice of tables or semicircular booths, and an open kitchen.
  • The menu at The Grill mixes upscale dishes (New York Strip with green peppercorn sauce, potatoes fried in duck fat and arugula) with comfort food (a rich beef Stroganoff with pappardelle and slow-roasted Niman Ranch brisket doused with a mushroom cream sauce and a dash of sherry).
