What are the best things to do near The Cloister?

There are plenty of fun things to do near The Cloister, which is located just off the coast of Georgia on secluded Sea Island. Here are three of our favorite activities when it’s time to venture out of the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel:

1. Shop on St. Simons Island. Cross over to St. Simons Island, which is a straight shot from this Sea Island hotel down Ocean Road, for some great shopping opportunities. Check out Tibi, a well-known women’s clothing shop specializing in eclectic patterns and fun colors. Visit The Pampered Foot, where you can pick up designer shoes by Stuart Weitzman, Kate Spade and many others. At Gentlemen’s Outfitters, men can pad their wardrobe with clothes from a variety of fashion designers, including the ultra-preppy Vineyard Vines.

2. Play golf. The beautiful coastal Georgia weather is conducive to squeezing in a few rounds of golf. Just head to one of three nearby championship courses at sister property The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club via a short complimentary shuttle ride from The Cloister. The Seaside Course, located on the southern tip of St. Simons Island, has hosted a number of USGA events and is home to the PGA Tour’s McGladrey Classic. The Plantation Course twists and turns through a golden marshland and live oak forest, and the Retreat Course is a challenging, 6,490-yard, par-72 course renovated in the early 2000s by Davis Love III and his brother Mark.

3. Go fishing. The Cloister’s concierge can book various boating excursions off Sea Island, including in-shore fishing for trout, redfish, flounder and whiting, near-shore fishing on the beaches from Cumberland Island to Sapelo Island for tarpon, shark, bull redfish and tripletail and offshore fishing over an artificial reef for mackerel, cobia, barracuda and sailfish.

Our neighboring island, St. Simons Island, offers a variety of historical landmarks including The Lighthouse, Christ Church and Fort Frederica.
