The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong opened in June 2010, so the entire hotel is shiny and new. The exterior of the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel is slick and sleek, while three different designers handled the interior décor. Singapore-based designer Richard Farnell did all the rooms, each of which is a contemporary take on Shanghai’s golden age (the 1920s and ’30s), when the city’s Art Deco building boom was just taking off. The most striking design is found in the guest room bathrooms, which are filled with cream marble and gold accents. A bathtub with white scalloped edges and a gold base swoops up so you can sit up and peek out of the window (though a TV is nearby, too). The wall next to tub is really a mirrored room divider that’s tinted soft brown, and a sheer cream curtain with tan branches and light blue flowers curves around the head of the tub. Elsewhere in the room, you’ll see reimagined retro details. Above the desks hangs a ribbed tulip-shaped glass lamp with a thick tassel of muted teal strings and jade-colored beads.
The Japanese firm Super Potato designed onsite restaurants Scena and Flair, adding in lots of warm colors, with bursts of red, orange and rich browns. Scena goes for a contemporary look: White walls have confetti cutouts, and floor-to-ceiling windows and an exhibition kitchen lend an open feel. Loft-like Flair is more rustic; walls are made of oya stones and Japanese mud, while pine wood is used in the tables and bar. Steve Leung was in charge of designing the sleek Cantonese restaurant Jin Xuan, which sparkles with gleaming light fixtures and gold screens. Circular booths have velvety deep-red flower-patterned seats that are sectioned off with pale gold drapes.
