The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong opened in June 2010 and there has not yet been a room renovation. When we recently visited the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel, everything was in top order — especially in the heavily trafficked public areas, where plush carpeting can get run down and floors scuffed up. The rooms, which were the work of Singapore-based designer Richard Farnell, continue to impress. They showcase a contemporary spin on Shanghai’s Art Deco-heavy golden age (the 1920s and ’30s), with teal couches with Greek-key-patterned cushions, decorative metal screens and mirrored-topped tables and room dividers. The 24-hour gym, which is often empty, offers new equipment; and the spa, a hushed zone of tranquility, remains gleaming.
