The category of best restaurant, in my opinion, means simple, delicious and consistent. My favorite is Rosso in Santa Rosa and Petaluma. Everything I want to eat and drink is on the menu at Rosso. Way more than a pizzeria, Rosso is a casual neighborhood place that consistently serves the highest quality food with a selection of nightly specials. The wood-fired pizzas are inspired and delicious, made with a red or white base. (Try the white base Moto Guzzi with house-smoked mozzarella, spicy sausage, roasted onions, olive oil and Swiss chard.) In season, nothing beats the crab Louie piadine, served on a warm puffy flat bread — just fold it over, cut in half and eat until a contented grin spreads across your face. The wine list features daily flight specials and is organized in the charming categories of: Here, There and Everywhere.
In Healdsburg, I adore Scopa. Open for dinner only, this tiny nest of a restaurant serves pizza, pasta and what I call nonna food — comfort dishes like polpette and arancini reminiscent of what my Italian grandmother used to make. Go on Wine Maker Wednesday for the chance to meet local winemakers as they work the floor and pour their wines.
