The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe

Mid-mountain escape with high-end touches
VERIFIED LUXURY
With a massive living room instead of a traditional lobby, the warm and inviting Ritz feels more like a cozy alpine retreat than a hotel. All of the rooms have fireplaces and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Skiers, take note: The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe sits mid-mountain on Northstar Resort. To make it especially alluring for those looking to hit the slopes, the luxury hotel offers a mountain concierge, ski-in/ski-out access and rooms with fireplaces and balconies overlooking the mountain and Martis Valley.

Take a break from skiing to feast at Four-Star Manzanita. And at the end of the day, relieve your tense muscles at the spa or with a dip in the heated coed pool that has mountain views.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Unwind after a day on the slopes in the luxury hotel’s 17,000 square foot slope-side spa, specializing in locally themed treatments.
  • Don’t worry about getting around. With a gondola in the backyard to take you up the slope and complimentary shuttle service to Truckee in the winter and lakeside beaches in the summer, the Lake Tahoe hotel has you covered.
  • Rent equipment or sign up for ski lessons from hotel’s efficient and knowledgeable Mountain concierge.
  • Upgrading to a club level room here is worth the splurge. The Ritz-Carlton Club level is a rejuvenating retreat offering perks like four food and beverage presentations daily and a dedicated concierge.
  • The Lake Club opened in summer 2017 to offer a luxurious and exclusive retreat. For an additional daily access fee, enjoy multi-level dining, a private boat pier, an outdoor whirlpool, fire pit and panoramic views.
Things to Know
  • Hop on the gondola for a ride to the Northstar Village. Here you’ll find an ice-skating rink surrounded by plush patio seating dotted with roaring fires.
  • You don’t want to miss the daily Marshmology experience. Every afternoon at 4:30 p.m., you are invited to meet with the marshmologist to learn how to make the best s’mores around.
  • During peak times of the year (ski season runs through early April), the traffic can be terrible. If you can, avoid heading to Tahoe on the Friday afternoon of a three-day holiday weekend, and extend your stay instead.
The Rooms
  • The masculine rooms are painted a natural tawny color and the beds have rich chocolate brown leather headboards and crisp white linens.
  • There are warm wood accents, twig details, and plaid curtains and pillows — the resulting suites feel comfortable yet luxurious, sophisticated yet rustic.
  • All rooms feature gas fireplaces, spacious closets and 55-inch HD TVs. Be sure to request a room with a view and you’ll be rewarded with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the room with natural light.
  • Contemporary marble bathrooms offer dual sinks, oversized deep-soaking tubs and separate showers.
The Restaurants
  • Emulating a classic mountain feel — a large stone fireplace and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows framed in wood — Four-Star Manzanita serves up California cuisine such as risotto with wild mushrooms and summer truffle, grilled salmon, tuna niçoise and avocado soup.
  • The alfresco restaurant, Backyard Bar & BBQ, is a "blues, brews and barbecue" concept where you'll find traditional barbecue offerings (think ribs, brisket and pulled pork) alongside pizza and off-the-grill foods (burger, hot dog, sausage).
  • In the summer, families can head to the eatery for cookouts on Friday evenings, while in the winter months Backyard Bar & BBQ becomes a ski-in/ski-out après hot spot.
  • The Lake Tahoe hotel’s other eatery, The Living Room, is decked out with a cozy fire pit and views of the Martis Valley. While mostly for cocktails and light bites, you can order up pub fare like lobster and chorizo fondue, white cheddar ale soup and bangers and mash.
