With an Asian influence that nods to its roots, the Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto is different from other hotels in that it blends modern luxury with traditional Chinese décor. Outside the hotel sits a large metal statue of a tree that weighs more than 40 tons and came directly from China. Welded to that tree are numerous metal birds — the combination of the tree and the birds is said to symbolize the earth and the city life coming together, similar to the way the hotel has blended both the old and the new. The property is relatively new — it opened its doors in August of 2012 — so it has a fresh-faced fitness facility and that wonderful brand-new feeling, with no signs of wear or tear. It’s a great place for both business and leisure travelers, as amenities speak to the interests of both and the helpful staff are happy to assist with anything from organizing the perfect business lunch to providing sightseeing tips.
