The Restoration

Stylish lofts in Charleston
The Restoration is discreetly tucked away off of King Street, Charleston’s most popular shopping strip. It makes sense that this property would sit among all of King Street’s high-end boutiques. The Restoration is a collection of stylish, apartment-style lofts that are a 180-degree turn from the colonial stateliness found in many of the city’s other upscale hotels.

With traits like that, you’d expect the structure to be a newly constructed one but The Restoration is far from it. One of the buildings that make up the hotel was built back in 1886. The others were erected in the early 1900s. Builders gutted the former row house and department store and initially envisioned condominiums for the location. When the market took a turn for the worse in the late 2000s, however, the property needed a new vision and this boutique beauty is the result.
Our Inspector's Highlights
  • When you combine all of the property’s vintage touches (leather headboards) with the one- and two-bedroom suites’ more modern features (whimsical mirrors, stainless-steel kitchen appliances and vessel sinks), you uncover a property with two very different stories to tell.
  • The buildings that make up the hotel were constructed between 1886 and 1940, but from peering around the masterfully restored department store and row house, you’d barely notice the structure ever had wrinkles.
  • It doesn’t much matter if you’ve reserved a 500-square-foot studio suite or the 2,300-square-foot rooftop terrace suite, you’ll feel as if you’re at home — and that’s before realizing that the unit may actually be bigger than your apartment.
  • The bespoke Amethyst Spa & Nail Bar offers a range of treatments and experiences, including deep tissue massages, organic body scrubs and on-trend nail services.
  • The honor bar offers a selection of high-end spirits to enjoy at your will. Just pour your libation and make a note of it and go about your merry way.
Things to Know
  • A complimentary breakfast is delivered to your door every morning in a picnic basket.
  • If you want to go beyond the immediate blocks for food, grab one of the bikes that the Charleston hotel loans out and two-wheel it anywhere you’d like for lunch or dinner.
  • While many say that the best time to visit Charleston is right after Labor Day (crowds have gone down and the temperature is in the upper 70s), The Restoration makes a Charleston visit enticing any time of year with its amenity-stuffed deals.
The Rooms
  • The 54 über-spacious lofts have nice perks (washers and dryers, balconies in some) and are quite inviting (hardwood floors, exposed brick).
  • Your suite not only comes with its own impressive kitchen, but the concierge can ensure that the fridge is stocked, too.
  • Every room includes toiletries from Beekman 1802, an upstate New York farm producing fine seasonal goods.
The Restaurants
  • The new seventh-floor restaurant, The Watch: Rooftop Kitchen & Spirits, serves up a menu of classic Lowcountry fare for those nights you don't feel like cutting on the stove.
  • If you’re in need of a quick jolt before heading out for the day, stop by The Rise Coffee Bar for a cup of joe, a spot of tea or a tasty pastry.
