On the shores of Bavaria’s Lake Chiemsee, Chiemgauhof Lakeside Retreat brings a contemporary perspective to the region’s waterfront traditions. Milan-based architect and designer Matteo Thun shaped the 28-suite property around its natural setting, with expansive glazing framing views of the water and the Chiemgau Alps.
Regional craftsmanship adds a sense of place to the interiors: ceramics come from nearby Fraueninsel, oak floorboards ground the rooms in natural materials and handwoven carpets are made in the Chiemgau region. Some of the luxury hotel suites feature private saunas or gas fireplaces, while others have Japanese-inspired bathtubs carved from larch wood.
At Restaurant Chiemgauhof, the menu follows the seasons and draws on ingredients from the area. A heated outdoor pool faces the water, while the private jetty offers direct access to Lake Chiemsee. From here, you can arrange boat charters or excursions to Herrenchiemsee, home to King Ludwig II’s palace, and Fraueninsel, known for its historic Benedictine abbey.
