In the small town of Joe Batt's Arm, Fogo Island Inn stands out, with its modernist structure on stilts dramatically jutting out of the rocky Atlantic coast. But a closer look reveals that the remote boutique hotel, designed by Newfoundland-born architect Todd Saunders, is deeply rooted in its destination.
The property’s unusual architecture recalls Fogo Island’s traditional fishing shacks. In the 29 rooms, everything from the handmade wooden furniture to the patchwork quilts comes from area artisans. The all-inclusive fine-dining meals showcase local ingredients, like cod and berries. Guests can experience Fogo Island’s outport culture through activities like punt rowing, “boil-up” lunches and jam-making workshops, often led by community members in their own homes.
And the hotel, open April to October, gives back to the destination: all of its operating surplus is reinvested into the community, ensuring that luxury hospitality directly sustains the culture and people who inspire it.
