The design style of The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island is that of an elegant Antebellum South mansion with noticeable English accents. The classic interior makes you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time as a houseguest in someone’s personal mansion. Each piece of furniture and décor has been lovingly picked out or gathered from traveling around the globe. You’ll notice lots of natural colors and wood accents, such as the striking black walnut floors. These floors were actually designed to creak in order to evoke the sense of a centuries-old building, despite the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel only opening in 2004.

Each wing of the lobby boasts a huge mural of the marsh, commissioned by local artist Karen Larson Turner; one of sunset on the East end and another of sunrise on the West end bring a touch of the coastal surroundings inside. Professional portraits are hung throughout the hotel as well, reinforcing the homey and slightly proper atmosphere. Overall, the design at the luxury Kiawah Island hotel is a throwback to the early days of American wealth, of luxury and enjoying the best that life has to offer.

The interior of The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island is characterized by grand spaces with high ceilings, and traditional but light Southern décor highlighted by antiques. The hotel has been designed to be elegant, but not too formal. Hirsch Bedner Associates from Atlanta is the interior designer at The Sanctuary.
