The historical center of Macau has been recognized as part of Unesco’s world heritage sites since 2005. Places like the Ruins of St. Paul, Senado Square and the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro are not to be missed by first-time visitors. Near Senado Square, there’s a straight circuit (through Rua Central and Rua do Padre António) passing along St Lawrence Church, the renovated Mandarin House, the Moorish Barracks and finally the iconic A-Ma temple, from which the name “Macau” is derived. As for more modern attractions, the largest casino in the world is located in Cotai (The Venetian, owned by American mogul Sheldon Adelson), a strip of reclaimed land where other large casinos are also situated.
