What should I pack for a trip to New York City?

Deciding what to pack for New York City can be tough — it is the fashion capital of the world, after all. But don’t let that intimidate you. Well, not too much anyway. Instead, focus on being prepared for extreme weather (humid summers and freezing winters) and a lot of walking. Even though the subway is efficient and generally reliable, you will find yourself walking a lot because there is so much to see and do on every block.

As for fashion, you can bring a few stylish outfits — or shop for new ones — or you can always fall back on all black. In Manhattan, wearing all black is always in fashion.

What are the best Italian restaurants in New York City?

If you talk about Italian food in New York, you can’t go wrong with Il Mulino and [our maître d’] Claudio. That’s our go-to birthday or date place.

What are the best jewelry stores in New York City?

It’s no secret that New York City is a capital of world-class shopping, so it only makes sense that Graff Diamonds has an outpost here. Designed by famed architect Peter Marino, a frequent Graff store collaborator, Graff Diamonds’ flagship New York store is located on the corner of Madison Avenue and 61st Street. To celebrate the opening of the striking 4,000-square-foot space, Graff Diamonds cut and polished the massive 100.57-carat Star of America diamond, making it the largest D flawless octagonal step cut diamond in the world. The store’s central location also puts you within easy reach of the area’s other luxury stores and boutiques, as well as the city’s most famous green space, Central Park.

What are the best neighborhoods in New York City?

It’s not much of a name, but down by the old seaport under the Brooklyn Bridge, they’re starting to change that more to add condos. I like Chelsea. I like Soho. I have a restaurant [David Burke Kitchen] in Soho, so I wouldn’t want to live there because it’d be too close. I also like Tribeca. Upper East Side, I like, but I’ve been working there since ’92 so it’s not as exciting to me to live there. And I like Harlem for what’s happening with the building and renovations.

What are the best seafood restaurants in New York City?

Fishtail by David Burke — that’s my place; that’s one of the best. Le Bernardin for sure, on the higher end. I think Aquagrill is very good; it’s in Soho. BR Guest has a couple of good seafood restaurants and Blue Water Grill is one of them. Oceana in Midtown is very good. And then you’ve got all the sushi restaurants that are not really considered seafood restaurants, but they still have good fish.

What are the best steakhouses in New York City?

I spent many years with Smith & Wollensky. Peter Luger has great beef. I think that Minetta Tavern has a great steak. Smith & Wollensky and Maloney & Porcelli are still very, very good. And for a scene, Del Frisco’s is pretty good. They have a better, energetic bar scene.

What are the best museums in New York City?

Museum of Natural History. There’s also the Museum of Art and Design, which we almost put a restaurant in. They have a lot of [Dale] Chihuly work. It’s a smaller museum, but it’s beautiful. It’s in a great location and easy to get to. I like MoMA, too.

What are the best restaurants in New York City?

I still like Le Cirque. I like Per Se and Jean Georges for fine dining. Lincoln Ristorante. Gotham Bar and Grill has been around for a long time — very, very good. I still like Blue Ribbon for late nights. New York has so many new restaurants. I still love The River Café and Aureole — I drop in there when I hit the theater. Sometimes I just go local in my neighborhood here and have pasta; Tiella is one of those places. I like Morimoto for sushi, and Tribeca Grill if I’m downtown.

What are the best bars in New York City?

The best bar in New York is on the roof of The James called Jimmy. There’s also a new little bar on Houston and Sullivan called Rogue & Canon. There’s Bill’s Food & Drink, which has been around for years, but it’s under new ownership; it’s on 54th Street. And Wollensky’s Grill has a nice bar. If it’s late-night, I’ll go to J.G. Melon and have a beer and a burger.

Peasant is one of my favorites. I like Marea. Brio is right next door to me; I love it. It’s more of a trattoria; it’s fantastic. There’s another little place called Tiella that’s on First Avenue and 61st with very good food. I like Babbo. And I like Lincoln Ristorante.

Which New York City restaurants are best for brunch?

I like brunch — the more creative, the better. I don’t mind if it’s a buffet or à la carte, but I like to go to places that have very interesting brunch dishes. I mean, I love eggs Benedict and I like an omelet but I like to see something a little more creative.

I love The River Café for brunch in Brooklyn because of the view and the fantastic food. The Water Club is another good place. It’s on the water. Asiate at Mandarin Oriental, New York has a very good brunch and the views are fabulous.
