An East Side Manhattan hotel with a view
One UN New York underwent a $70 million renovation to its West Tower in 2012. Of the two towers, this spot hosts the luxury rooms, gym, pool and restaurant, which only serves breakfast but soon will offer meals throughout the day. The East Tower also received a full makeover in 2013.
With the recent renovations, this 40-story, two-tower hotel in Midtown East is worth a visit because it offers a unique vantage point with spectacular views of the East River, Brooklyn and, given that it is directly across the street from the United Nations headquarters, one of the only clear glimpses of this grand institution. Plus, it’s conveniently located within walking distance from Grand Central, the East River Ferry, the Museum of Modern Art, the Chrysler Building and shopping next to the Empire State Building in Herald Square. In a way, it has all the perks of staying central in Times Square, but without the chaos, and is a great place to take kids. Another benefit of staying here, since the UN building is so protected, is it’s one of the safest areas in the city.
While the view and location prove excellent reasons to visit, the 439 rooms are also worth checking out. Once upon a time, the building housed apartments, so each room, from the two-bedroom suites to the deluxe habitations, all remain distinctive, and with more space than your average New York hotel accommodation. Aside from that, this hotel is good for staying fit on your visit as it offers a gym with glass walls that look out toward the river, a pool, an indoor tennis court and there is a public running path right outside the door.
