Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The Shanghai hotel achieves a laid-back yet luxe atmosphere, with homey touches that contrast bold displays of contemporary art.
  • Satisfy your sweet tooth at the cozy café Éclair, which features its namesake French pastry in a variety of flavors, ranging from traditional (chocolate or almond) to quirky (mango, black forest and Grand Marnier).
  • One of Andaz’s most popular offerings is the Xintiandi Style Afternoon Tea, which like the luxury hotel itself, is a modern take on a classic, offering a selection of teas, sandwiches, scones and, of course, the signature éclairs.
  • Best of all is the wireless Internet — it’s not only free and fast, but it’s also routed through a VPN to allow access to news, social media and video-sharing websites that are otherwise tricky to view on the Chinese mainland.
Things to Know
  • Look closely for the pseudo-philosophical messages inscribed on the table and windows in the guest rooms: Ours read: “Love you, thus bother you.”
  • All non-alcoholic beverages and snacks in the mini-bar are complimentary and refreshed daily, including two flavors of potato chips, several Hershey chocolate bars and White Rabbit candies, sodas, juices, and still and sparkling mineral waters.
  • At the Hai Pai breakfast buffet, enjoy made-to-order eggs and customized noodle soup, prepared by one of the chefs at the open kitchen in a variety of styles like Shanghainese and wonton.
  • While the hotel’s 24-hour gym features state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, it lacks any views because of its underground location.
The Rooms
  • Guest rooms have a modern, industrial feel with alternating dark walnut and light olive wood flooring, gray stone for the walls and structural columns.
  • Furnishings are few but sleek, with a low platform bed frame, polished wooden credenza and unfussy nightstands.
  • All of the beds feature a backdrop composed of Chinese silk panels in a riotous patchwork of colorful prints.
  • You won’t want to leave your plush, pillow-top king-sized bed, so the hip hotel has equipped both nightstands in each room with control panels to manage lighting, privacy notifications and blinds.
  • The bathrooms at Andaz feature an advanced Toto washlet (with motion-sensor lid and heated seat) and an open-air shower with an adjustable rain shower head, complete with customizable LED lighting installed in the boxy acrylic bases of the tub and sink.
The Look
  • Interesting contemporary art displays add whimsy to the hotel, including the series of five pop art rabbit figurines lining the wall between reception and the elevator bank, where an ethnic print on display is overlaid by a video of swimming goldfish.
  • Guest room corridors convey a warm tone, with beige carpeting, wooden walls with flying bird decals and an unusual curved profile as you progress down the hallways.
  • The honeycomb stone façade of the Xintiandi hotel, with its oblong shape and curved bubbly window frames, screams 1960s, echoed by the reproduction Arne Jacobsen red leather egg chair placed in every room.
  • Above the lobby hangs an enormous egg constructed of curved brushed steel slats, inside which you can relax and enjoy a beverage; of course the leather club chairs below in the sunken lounge are equally as comfortable.
