T'ang Court, Shanghai

Elegant regional cuisine in Xintiandi
VERIFIED LUXURY
Look through the iPad menu at T'ang Court to see hunger-inducing photos of traditional Cantonese and Shanghainese dishes. At The Langham, Shanghai, Xintiandi’s signature restaurant, Hong Kong native Kwong Wei Keung and Shanghainese chef Tony Su team up to give these regional cuisines an authentic interpretation. The chefs work together to create the long menu of seafood, poultry and barbecue dishes.

You’ll have plenty of options when dining at the Shanghai restaurant: T'ang Court offers popular set business lunches, prix fixe dinners and an à la carte menu. Don’t miss the delicate dim sum at lunch. Because of its excellent location in the popular Xintiandi neighborhood, the restaurant attracts a mix of tourists and young Shanghainese.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • There’s a razor-sharp attention to detail here. Elegant touches include the staff’s uniforms — courtesy of renowned fashion designer Lu Kun.
  • Although the Shanghai restaurant is in a new, luxury hotel and serves exquisite cuisine, the prices can be quite reasonable, especially for lunch and weekend dim sum meals.
  • The scene at T'ang Court is chic but subdued and the restaurant is quiet and serene. The tables are well positioned so the room isn’t silent, but you won’t hear too much chatter from your neighbors. Sitting in the plush dining chairs, you’d never know jam-packed business strip Huaihai Road was a stone’s throw away.
  • Its elegant private dining rooms bring in the business crowds and offer views of Xintiandi and Taiping Lake. These are perfect for conducting meetings in a refined, comfortable and private space.
Things to Know
  • During the day, the Shanghai restaurant is popular with nearby office workers who come for T'ang Court’s set business lunch. On the weekends, hotel guests, locals, expats and visitors pour in for delicate dim sum and steaming pots of tea.
  • From Monday to Friday, the fine-dining restaurant serves lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 5:30 to 10 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, lunch is available until 2:30 p.m.; dinner hours are the same.
  • T'ang Court’s main dining room is intimate for a hotel restaurant, seating just 24 people. Whether or not you’re staying at the Shanghai hotel, it’s important to book a table in advance, both for weekday lunches, dinner and weekend brunch.
The Food
  • The menu at T'ang Court offers a wide range of classical Cantonese cuisine — from barbecue to bird’s nests — as well as many traditional Shanghainese dishes. There’s a focus on seafood in both types of cooking, so you’ll find plenty of fish and shellfish (including lobster and abalone) on the menu.
  • Some of T'ang Court’s most popular specialties include chef Kwong Wei Keung’s signature lobster with cheese whole abalone and noodles; and steamed grouper with mushrooms and shrimp roe in soy sauce.
  • Among the Chinese restaurant’s Shanghainese classics, the pan-fried pork buns with crab meat and steamed pork dumplings with crab meat are ones you shouldn’t miss.
  • Other favorites? The addictive deep-fried prawns with wasabi-mayonnaise dressing are a crispy and spicy combination. The beautifully brown-lacquered crispy chicken is a signature dish. The tender roasted beef ribs are served with a housemade sauce. Braised bean curd with mushrooms features silky soft tofu that swims in a rich consommé.

The Look
  • T'ang Court’s sophisticated decor has a subtle Chinese flavor. Deep reds and yellows color the fabrics, while the floors and chairs have natural wood hues.
  • The space is light-filled and airy — the soaring ceiling height and wall of windows lend drama to the main dining room, which looks out onto a terrace.
  • T'ang Court’s nine private rooms all have stunning views of the lovely Xintiandi area, which is filled with shops and restaurants inside old shikumen-style houses.
  • Designer Peter Remedios created the original look here, and the Shanghai restaurant was recently updated by Hong Kong design company Aedas with fresh elements, including artwork and new chairs, and Narumi bone china table settings.
