Shangri-La, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi

Arabian luxury with a view

Located directly across the water from the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Shangri-La, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi is a tough-to-beat choice for travelers who are looking for a more traditional Arabian experience.

With ample sunbathing and dining options, as well as some of the most welcoming staff in the city, family holidaymakers can tailor their experience to suit everyone. Find your bliss among the spacious grounds, dissected by a canal for traditional Arabian abra boats and flush with lots of lush foliage hosting sweetly singing birds.

From Eastern and regional specialties to French fine dining for a special occasion, the hotel’s restaurants provide a culinary journey across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The classic waterfront property excels in creating a genuinely warm ambiance.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Attracting guests and residents alike, the seafood night at Sofra Bld is one of the best in the city with a theatrically carved tuna and fresh local catches. Be sure to try hammour, the local specialty.
  • You can walk or take a hotel buggy around the grounds and adjacent sights, but you’d be remiss to overlook the canals where a traditional abra can whisky you on complimentary rides to the adjacent souk or the Shangri-La’s sister property, Traders Hotel.
  • Not only does the Abu Dhabi hotel boast its own white-sand beach along tranquil water, it also has four pools: a striking infinity pool, a peaceful adults-only option, a kids-only swimming hole and another in the health club — all with views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
  • Get a taste of Arabian culture with an evening shisha session. The staff is adept at putting together smooth, fruity blends — the apple flavor is a particular highlight.
  • Stay centered at the Abu Dhabi property’s massive spa and health club. The facility is so large, it’s situated in its own building adjacent to the hotel.

Things to Know

  • In the cooler months, the hotel’s beachfront Ess Lounge plays outdoor movies Thursday to Saturday starting at 7 p.m. Arrive early to grab one of the plush seats on the grass.
  • Shangri-La hosts Abu Dhabi’s annual dragon boat festival during the third week of October. It attracts both local and international visitors, and the hotel tends to sell out for the popular event, so be sure to book well in advance if you plan to attend.
  • For the best view of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, ask for a room in the north wing.

The Rooms

  • Villa options are versatile, ideal for both family stays and for those who wish to host an event or party for the day. The four-bedroom villas have a private swimming pool, dining room and garage. Some have their own cinema.
  • The spacious marble bathroom has a walk-in rain shower and separate tub.
  • Every room comes with a comfortable balcony to take advantage of the region’s lovely winter climate.
  • Neutral tones fill the spaces. You’ll find local design touches, including the grand Arabic-style wooden doors on the closet and the arched entryways.
  • Upgrade to a Horizon Club room for a plethora of extra perks, including private check-in in your room, an optional late checkout until 4 p.m., a special lounge that serves food and drinks all day long, a suit pressing and more.

The Look

  • The luxury hotel has a more traditional Arabian look than many modern hotels found in the UAE. Deep colors, rich woods and plush furnishings give the Abu Dhabi property a regal feel.
  • The authentic vintage telephones you see around each floor aren’t just for decoration; they can be used to call the hotel operator.
  • You’ll feel immersed in desert style with carpeting that mimics rippling dunes, colorful camel bags doubling as wall décor and lighting sconces playing ornate patterns on the walls that recall Moroccan decadence.
