The Dorian, Autograph Collection

Calgary’s literary-inspired retreat

Cheeky fun comes to Calgary in the form of The Dorian, Autograph Collection, a hotel that draws inspiration from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Quotes from Wilde dot the property, as do peacock feathers and copies of the author’s famous 1891 novel. The literary references carry over to the restaurants as well: Prologue serves as the hotel’s bright all-day café and bar (where you can partake in the weekend Wilde About Tea experience), Bistro Novelle specializes in burgers and sandwiches (it resides in the Courtyard by Marriott Calgary Downtown South in the building’s lower portion) and The Wilde on 27 offers a modern rooftop restaurant (where you will find a mosaic of Wilde made from book pages and a menu that resembles a tome).

While the luxury hotel showcases an affinity for the Irish literary icon, it hasn’t forgotten its roots. The gigantic flowers featured in the hallway carpets, for example, nod to Alberta’s nickname, Wild Rose Country, and the bar pours locally made Earl Grey gin from nearby Eau Claire Distillery.

Opened in 2022, the chic boutique hotel is equal parts luxe city-center property, stylish hangout and quirky hideaway. Floral wallpaper and vintage touches mix with modern lines and comforts (like well-stocked brass bar trolleys in the rooms and sensor lights on nightstands and in bathrooms) to create a contemporary downtown hub.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Dorian, Autograph Collection plays into its literary theme with a unique work of art in the lobby. Mark of the Craft, a framed, digital rendering of Dorian Gray, evolves from handsome socialite to nightmarish monster in a literal depiction of the book’s classic theme. Scan the QR code to share an anonymous confession, and in turn, you’ll see one from another guest, followed by the option to condemn or absolve it. The portrait will change depending on how many guests condemn or absolve the secrets.
  • The luxury hotel places you within walking distance of popular city sights like the Calgary Tower and Prince’s Island Park. A quick drive will land you at the Calgary Zoo and Studio Bell.
  • Elegant in-room touches include large vintage-inspired wardrobes, Aesop bath products in the white marble bathrooms, Lavazza coffee machines and well-stocked bar carts. Of course, every accommodation offers a hardback copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
  • Sip on cocktails over Calgary at The Wilde on 27. The 27th-floor terrace offers alfresco seating encased in seven-foot glass walls so you can enjoy outdoor dining no matter the weather.
  • While you may come for the views, stay for the delicious, elegant food at The Wilde on 27. In true Calgary style, meat reigns on the menu with dishes like Alberta bison tartare with quail yolk confit, local Grizzly Gouda, shallots, capers and cherries that’s finished with smoke tableside, and the Black Apron beef tenderloin with caulilini, a Walla Walla onion tart, crispy potatoes and a brown butter sabayon.

The Look

  • The small yet striking lobby features a stylish blend of sharp, ultra-modern lines in homage to the novel’s shattered mirror alongside soft, 19th-century motifs like floral wallpaper. Gold textiles and marble accents tie the two period themes together in chic fashion.
  • The Calgary hotel’s overall design is bold, with modern floral-patterned carpets contrasting with rich bronze walls in the hallways and Wilde-inspired artworks displayed throughout.
  • Patterns feature prominently throughout the boutique hotel. The 137 guest rooms might include matching wallpaper and upholstery in Victorian-inspired designs and jewel-toned colors juxtaposed against clean, white furniture.
  • The two onsite eateries in Calgary’s first lifestyle hotel follow suit in the design department, featuring vivid patterns and vintage touches like bronze accents.
