Cheeky fun comes to Calgary in the form of The Dorian, Autograph Collection, a hotel that draws inspiration from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Quotes from Wilde dot the property, as do peacock feathers and copies of the author’s famous 1891 novel. The literary references carry over to the restaurants as well: Prologue serves as the hotel’s bright all-day café and bar (where you can partake in the weekend Wilde About Tea experience), Bistro Novelle specializes in burgers and sandwiches (it resides in the Courtyard by Marriott Calgary Downtown South in the building’s lower portion) and The Wilde on 27 offers a modern rooftop restaurant (where you will find a mosaic of Wilde made from book pages and a menu that resembles a tome).
While the luxury hotel showcases an affinity for the Irish literary icon, it hasn’t forgotten its roots. The gigantic flowers featured in the hallway carpets, for example, nod to Alberta’s nickname, Wild Rose Country, and the bar pours locally made Earl Grey gin from nearby Eau Claire Distillery.
Opened in 2022, the chic boutique hotel is equal parts luxe city-center property, stylish hangout and quirky hideaway. Floral wallpaper and vintage touches mix with modern lines and comforts (like well-stocked brass bar trolleys in the rooms and sensor lights on nightstands and in bathrooms) to create a contemporary downtown hub.

Mark of the Craft, a framed, digital rendering of Dorian Gray, evolves from handsome socialite to nightmarish monster in a literal depiction of the book’s classic theme. Scan the QR code to share an anonymous confession, and in turn, you’ll see one from another guest, followed by the option to condemn or absolve it. The portrait will change depending on how many guests condemn or absolve the secrets.
