Pendry Chicago

A sophisticated stay in the Loop
VERIFIED LUXURY

The Windy City’s design-focused hotel scene got a major upgrade when Pendry Chicago’s doors blew open in 2021. A 364-room property carved from the polished granite walls of the art deco Carbide & Carbon Building erected back in 1929, it makes a statement before the staff ever utters a word. Gilded elevators and black-and-white flooring only say so much, though. The air of confidence and sophistication floating through these corridors stems from somewhere else. And we have a good idea of where that might be: Pendry founder Alan Fuerstman is the same visionary behind the beloved Montage Hotels & Resorts brand.

A contemporary property built on a century-old foundation, Pendry Chicago’s aesthetic sits at the corner of past experiences and present expectations. Here, you can spend an evening sipping scotch in the moody, leather-draped Bar Pendry before working out with the latest exercise equipment in your room the next morning. Venteux, a Parisian-inspired restaurant, and Château Carbide, the seasonal rooftop escape, are timeless spots with Instagram-worthy photo opportunities.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Of the 300-plus smartly decorated units, 81 are suites. The Chicago hotel’s upper-floor Specialty Suites come with marble baths, spacious living quarters and a dining table for four. The larger Pendry Suites (roughly 1,000 square feet each) have all those perks in addition to elegant extras like a guest bath, a piano and breathtaking 35th- and 36th-floor views.
  • While the oysters, caviar and dry-aged ribeye are delights to share in Venteux’s quaint banquettes, the café’s cocktail menu is not to be ignored. Drinks such as The Honey Badger (Bombay Sapphire, grapefruit juice, cucumber, lime and honey) and Bobbin’ For Apples (Bacardi 8, Copper & Kings apple brandy, Liquid Alchemist apple spice, orange and lime) are highlights.
  • Another tasty time to imbibe is during Bar Pendry’s Boozy Tea. A twist on traditional afternoon tea, Pendry Chicago’s Sunday ritual consists of live music, delicious bites and tea-based cocktails like the Emerald Petal (green tea, Tito’s vodka, citron and ginger beer).
  • In a city of skyscrapers, this art deco landmark stands out. Shaped like a champagne bottle, the façade sports black granite, green and gold terra cotta with bronze trim. And the bottle’s cap is made of 24-karat gold leaf.
  • When the weather warms up, head to the 24th floor for the rooftop Château Carbide. The seasonal rooftop bar channels the French Riviera with a menu of rosés, but the surrounding skyscrapers remind you that you’re in Chicago.
