Château de Berne

A charming countryside wine château in Provence
VERIFIED LUXURY

Sprawling across 1,272 acres of Mediterranean forest, vines and olive groves, Château de Berne feels like you’re staying in a tucked-away village in Provence’s countryside. Only an hour from St. Tropez, the 34 rooms, historic château and private villas couldn’t feel farther away. Guests may recognize the metallic gold sun emblem crowning bottles of the château rosé, grown and crafted on site in the winery and cellar — which is open for tours and tastings — and wine is a constant theme throughout the expansive estate.

Indulge in some sparkling during afternoon teatime, cozy up on the bar terrace overlooking the vines, relax with a vinotherapy spa treatment or dine at the excellent garden-driven restaurant Le Jardin de Berne. Here, the list includes both the boutique hotel’s bottles as well as some of the most exceptional from regions across France.

Two pools take advantage of Provence’s 300-plus days of sunshine a year, but if you’re looking for an active excursion, set off along the property’s 60 miles of hiking and biking trails through forests and along riverbanks. When you’re ready to sightsee, the tiny fortified medieval village of Lorgues is just a 10-minute drive away.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Each of the five private villas have their own look and feel, with pond-like heated pools encased by pine and olive trees, fully equipped pool houses and libraries with bay windows overlooking the surrounding countryside.
  • The Château is a converted family residence dating to the 18th century that sleeps up to 20 people and includes a vegetable garden and terrace with outdoor dining under stone arches; a grand library with wraparound mezzanine; and a pool surrounded by wicker furniture and cabanas.
  • Be sure to enjoy a meal at Le Jardin de Berne. Though for an elevated experience, dine private at the exclusive Chef’s Table in the wings of the restaurant, which seats up top 10 for a five- or seven-course tasting menu.
  • The spa includes a menu of vinotherapy treatments like grape seed scrubs and grape body wraps using products crafted from handpicked grapes in Burgundy.
  • The estate was made for oenophiles. Stroll around the wine hotel’s 370 acres of vines before touring the cellar and winery, sampling a selection of wines alongside cheese and charcuterie.

  • You’ll find seasonal happenings taking place all year long at the Provence hotel, from a summer jazz concert series with big-name acts performing on an open-air stage to a Christmas village and market unfolding in the vines in winter.
  • The modern, French country-style cooking school hosts classes on Thursday mornings with dishes inspired by what’s growing in the garden that are paired alongside wines from the estate.
