The Egerton House Hotel

A hidden gem in the heart of Knightsbridge
Two grand red brick Victorian townhouses conjoin to form the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Egerton House Hotel. This luxury, 28-room boutique property — part of the family-run Red Carnation Hotel Collection — is primely located on a quiet residential street in the heart of leafy Knightsbridge.

Here, among pretty private gardens and mews houses, mingle with the locals who frequent the bar, or explore the museums, shops, restaurants and Royal Parks on your doorstep.

Set over four floors, with elevator access to all, The Egerton House has mastered that home-away-from-home feel, albeit one where you have two staff members to every guest and Picassos hang on the wall. For the duration of your stay, this family and pet-friendly hotel will pamper you with on-point personable service, make you smile with thoughtful treats and keep a note of your preferences, ensuring your return visit is made even more special.
Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The London hotel is famous for its martinis, whipped up by bartender Antonio Pizzuto, and served with its signature cheese on toast and other complimentary canapés. We recommend sticking with the classic, served in a glass frozen to -7 degrees Fahrenheit, swilled with vermouth, and filled with gin of the same temperature right to the rim.
  • The Egerton House excels in the details: takeout coffee on request; fresh fruit, housemade cakes in the afternoon; infused iced teas in the summer; hot chocolate and marshmallows in the winter — all laid out in the Drawing Room for you to help yourself to as you please. You’ll be spoiled with tailored gifts at turndown, too.
  • London’s top museums may be right around the corner, but the hotel’s private collection is equally impressive: an original Charles Schulz sketch of Snoopy hangs in the bar, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s lithographs can be found in the lobby and there are Picassos in both room 36 and the V&A Suite. Speak to the front desk for a booklet detailing it all.
  • The property takes pet-friendly to another level, with a welcome hamper, pet concierge to tend to your pooch’s needs and doggy afternoon tea, which features treats made to strict nutritional guidelines, such as peanut butter cookies, served on a traditional tea stand.
  • Along with the constantly refreshed fresh fruit and coconut treats in the room, the reception area also offers numerous glass jars filled with candy, cereal bars, nuts, wasabi peanuts and more.
Things to Know
  • Book ahead if you’re planning a stay around popular annual events, such as Wimbledon, Royal Ascot and the Chelsea Flower Show; the Knightsbridge hotel is always at full capacity during these times.
  • There’s no formal restaurant onsite, but the chef will whip up a British classic (or a dish of your choosing, if the ingredients are on hand) for you to eat in the Bar or Drawing Room. The Dining Room (where breakfast is served) can also be made up for private dinners, and afternoon tea is available daily, with vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian and other dietary requirements catered for.
  • It’s worth filling out the guest preference form you’ll receive after booking. The staff will use this to make your stay as personalized as possible, such as shaking up your favorite cocktail as a welcome drink.
  • With antiques and fine art at every turn, you may get the impression that Egerton House is not set up for families. Quite the opposite; children are well looked after with little robes and slippers, special menus, entertainment packs and Edwin the bear placed on their pillow at turndown.
The Rooms
  • Ultra-fast Wi-Fi connection, a pin code to download newspapers to your personal device (or one of the available iPads), iPod docks and wireless Bose speakers offer in-room entertainment, while the complimentary mineral water, Jing Tea, Nespresso coffee and housemade cookies will keep you sated.
  • The 28 rooms and suites are equally sumptuous and one of a kind, from muted palettes, to striped blue, to opulent red in the Master V&A Suite. Original Victorian features, fabric wall coverings, eclectic antique furniture sourced at auction houses in London and New York, satin-soft, 200-thread-count linen and hand-painted scenes on the ceilings make it feel more like a private home.
  • Flooded with natural light, the three Studio Suites easily fit a family of four, with a king-size bed and a velvet sofa that folds out to become a double, sleeping two children up to 12 years old. During the day, it’s packed away, so you can make full use of the lounge area. There’s also a choice of interconnecting rooms.
  • Floor-to-ceiling colored marble, a flat-screen TV, a towelling pillow and Penhaligon’s toiletries make for a luxurious soak in the tub, while a single red carnation in a vase next to the sink is a sweet nod to the hotel’s heritage.
Nearby Attractions
  • The hotel’s partnership with local businesses means you can benefit from some exclusive perks, such as tickets to sold-out V&A exhibitions, private fittings with Princess Diana’s former milliner John Boyd and complimentary access to the facilities and classes at Aquilla Health & Fitness for the duration of your stay.
  • You needn’t venture far for a spot of shopping: Harrods is right around the corner on Brompton Road, along with a number of high-end boutiques. Sloane Street, the King’s Road and Harvey Nichols are also close.
  • Hyde Park is a 10-minute walk away. Make the best of it during the summer with the luxury hotel’s picnic service. Staff will prepare and pack your selected food and drink items into a basket or rucksack, and even carry it to the park and lay it all out for you, if you like.
  • The Science Museum, Natural History Museum and Royal Albert Hall are all within short walking distance, providing plenty of entertainment for the whole family. For further inspiration, ask for the dedicated children’s itinerary at the front desk.
