Sala's Camp

A spectacular seat to Kenya’s Great Migration
VERIFIED LUXURY
Known for its laid-back atmosphere and excellent location, Sala’s Camp sits along the Sand and Keekorok rivers on the southern edge of Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. Near the border with Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, this game-rich area is known for its prolific big five sightings and for being one of the first Masai Mara safari camps to witness the wildebeest migration.

Reached by a short bush flight and a game-drive transfer, the all-inclusive camp feels more relaxed thanks to its southern location. Game drives have a more low-key, leisurely pace, while the camp’s intimate scale — with just seven tented suites — allows for highly personalized service.

During the Great Migration, which typically takes place from July to October, you will have a rare chance to witness over a million wildebeest and thousands of zebras, gazelles and antelopes as they attempt dangerous river crossings.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Warm and personal, check-in at the Maasai Mara hotel feels like arriving at the home of old friends. The camp managers are often on hand to greet guests, while the attentive team quickly learns individual preferences and tailors each stay accordingly.
  • Rather than adhering to rigid schedules, activities are customized around guests' interests. Whether tracking big cats at dawn, following elephant herds across the golden plains or enjoying a leisurely afternoon game drive, guides adjust the experience to suit each group.
  • The guides here combine deep wildlife expertise with extensive knowledge of Maasai culture and local history. Their ability to interpret the landscape — spotting things most guests would overlook — adds value to every drive, while optional experiences, such as a hot air balloon trip, provide a different perspective on the reserve.
  • Sala's Camp is part of The Safari Collection, founded by fourth-generation Kenyans Tanya and Mikey Carr-Hartley. The company supports conservation, education and community initiatives across Kenya, helping to ensure tourism revenues contribute to long-term environmental and social impact.
  • The camp’s cook-out bush breakfasts and sundowners make the safari experience feel all the more immersive. During early-morning game drives, you might pause to enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast in the wilderness, while evenings wind down with crisp G&Ts served against the Mara’s vast landscapes.

The Tents

  • With just seven tented suites, including two larger family tents, the luxury hotel never feels crowded. Accommodations are spread out along the river, offering privacy, sweeping views and a close connection to nature throughout your stay.
  • Ranging from 732 to 1,163 square feet, each tent has floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto a private deck complete with lounge areas, a plunge pool, and river or wilderness views. For a truly special evening, request a private dinner on your deck beneath a canopy of stars.
  • The tents strike a perfect balance between classic safari style and modern comfort. Canvas walls, handcrafted wooden furniture and local artwork create a relaxed and authentic atmosphere, while separate sleeping, bathing and lounge areas provide ample space to spread out and relax between game drives.
  • Bathrooms feature rain showers and separate bathtubs, flush toilets and handmade Kenyan toiletries. Hot water is reliable — a welcome luxury in such a remote setting — and little touches, like complimentary laundry services, yoga mats and insect repellent, make guests feel well cared for.
