Soneva Jani

Overwater elegance in the Maldives

The name Soneva Jani is inspired by a word that means "wisdom" in Sanskrit, and it's certainly wise to spend a few nights here surrounded by the pristine beauty of the Maldives. Most of the 54 villas rest above the turquoise water in their own buildings complete with a separate walkway and entrance. Situated on just three-and-a-half miles in the Noonu Atoll, the lagoon is isolated from the other islands, ensuring you have serenity.

But Soneva Jani isn't just about solitary relaxation. Venture out to the property’s 10-plus restaurants and bars, which range from casual to health-conscious to high-end, all featuring local seafood and organic produce. The resort also hosts an array of experiences, including sunset cruises on a traditional dhoni boat, snorkeling, stargazing, water sports, movie screenings over the lagoon and more. For spa services, choose from two Soneva Soul wellness facilities — one over the water and the other on land over the treetops — which house a dedicated ayurvedic center. With so much to do at the resort, you won't need to leave this little slice of paradise for anything.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • For the ultimate Maldives hotel experience, the expansive Chapter One Water Retreats come with a retractable roof over the master bedroom, an outdoor bathroom with a sunken bath, a private freshwater pool, a sizable deck and a children's sleeping area. But the most exciting feature is the slide from the top floor that drops into the lagoon (most villas on the property have a slide).
  • Soneva Jani is great for kids. There are bicycles and tricycles to get around on, a children's club, the technology-free Mini Den, menus that cater to young appetites, water adventures and Medhufaru beach scavenger hunts, to name a few of the many offerings.
  • Reserve one of the 27 all-inclusive Chapter Two villas to get showered with amenities. You will have unlimited access to spa treatments, diving equipment, seaplane transfers from Malé, the experience offerings, and the resort's food and wine. This tier also includes a dedicated barefoot butler and for those traveling with kids, the children's club.
  • While the crystal-clear waters will be your focus during the day, turn your attention to the stars at night. Soneva Jani debuted the Maldives’ first overwater observatory with a resident astronomer ready to give you a tour of the cosmos.
  • Don't miss one of the special picnics. Choose between the castaway picnic on a secluded private island or a nighttime feast under the stars with an astronomer and a telescope.

The Restaurants

  • The dishes served at Overseas by Mathias Dahlgren are just as beautiful as the surrounding waters, and they fuel the soul as well. Run by acclaimed Swedish chef and restaurateur Mathias Dahlgren, this overwater restaurant features the seafood found in and near the Indian Ocean mixed with produce grown from local, organic gardens.
  • Have a romantic dinner in 32-seat The Crab Shack, an open-air spot on the beach that's decorated with artistically positioned pieces of driftwood. Show up barefoot amid the relaxed surroundings and order chef Priyantha Ranathunga’s Sri Lankan mud crab curry.
  • For a delicious plant-based meal, book a table at chef Diana Von Cranach's So Wild. The menu changes all the time but may include dishes such as papaya ceviche, miso eggplant "scallops," and green mango and young coconut noodles.
  • Imagine a beach barbecue but elevated. So Primitive cooks rainbow runner filet, chicken thighs, prawns, pineapple and more over an open flame in front of diners.
  • You won’t be able to resist So Guilty, the chocolate room. All the made-in-house confections, including truffles and bonbons, are complimentary.
