The Phoenicia Malta

A magnificent makeover of a Maltese landmark
VERIFIED LUXURY

Originally built in 1939 for Lord and Lady Strickland, The Phoenicia Malta is a timeless-classic-turned-luxury-retreat. After a multimillion-dollar refresh, this architectural art-deco beauty, with 132 guest rooms and sprawling gardens near a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Valletta’s grande dame of hotels.

At the heart of The Phoenicia Malta, Palm Court Lounge opens to a sprawling terrace overlooking the gardens. Elegant but approachable colonial-chic interiors were designed in collaboration with esteemed U.K. designer Peter Young. The cheery Mediterranean patterns and greenery of the lobby flow seamlessly into the rooms, where you can find similar aesthetics with pops of blue and pink.

Beyond the infinity outdoor pool, the hotel has a large indoor pool as part of Phoenicia Spa & Wellness with a sauna, steam room and salt room. Thanks to the onsite vegetable garden, the hotel’s Contessa features international favorites, like salt-baked fish with seasonally fresh, garden-to-table ingredients. After dinner, The Club Bar is the ideal spot to relax with a glass of Maltese wine on the terrace.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Located just outside the capital, The Phoenicia Malta makes a wonderful home base to explore the UNESCO-listed city, from ancient cathedrals to harbor tours.
  • For stunning vistas of Marsamxett Harbor, don’t miss a dip in the hotel’s infinity pool — also known by locals as one of the city’s most Instagrammable spots.
  • Unwind at Phoenicia Spa & Wellness, a modern oasis in a historical town that specializes in tailor-made massages and non-invasive skin treatments.
  • As a former British colony, Malta adores its daily tea ritual. Every afternoon, an exquisite high tea is served at Palm Court Lounge.
  • Even if you’re not there for an event, it’s worth taking a peek at the Malta hotel’s stunning art-deco ballroom. It’s supposedly a favorite of the queen of England; she’s requested to dine there on past visits.

Things to Know

  • For the best views, request a room with a balcony (avoid the third floor, no balconies are included).
  • Start your day off with a zing. Contessa offers the most vibrant, fresh-squeezed orange juice; it’s made from Maltese oranges.
  • The luxury hotel’s Club Bar features regular live music. It’s a great spot for a nightcap.
  • Admire the hotel’s Edward Caruana Dingli paintings located in the corridors adjacent to Palm Court Lounge. It’s the largest private collection of one of Malta’s finest artists.
