Harbor View Hotel

Martha’s Vineyard’s elegant grande dame

Situated in a scenic spot overlooking the Edgartown Lighthouse, the harbor and the Atlantic Ocean, the Harbor View Hotel commands unparalleled views. Visitors have been admiring these panoramas since 1891, when the Harbor View Hotel opened its doors. It was one of the first properties to help transform the former whaling port into an upscale resort town. Since then, it’s hosted everyone from beachgoers to filmmakers — director Steven Spielberg and the cast and crew of Jaws took up an entire floor there when they shot the well-known film on Martha’s Vineyard in 1975.

Behind the shingled Victorian facade and wraparound porch, you’ll find more modern interiors, including coastal-inspired public areas and 117 rooms and suites bathed in white. There are accommodations for every kind of vacation style: classic in the grand Historic Building, contemporary in The Roxana, private in the standalone Captain’s Cottages or all-out luxury in the Presidential Skyhouse Wing. These all underwent an extensive 2020 renovation that also included two new restaurants.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Surrounded by water, the Edgartown hotel has an enviable and tranquil location. It affords vistas of the beach throughout the property, yet it’s only a five-minute stroll to the shops, restaurants and galleries in town (and if you don’t feel like walking, a golf cart will transport you there).
  • Bettini offers a taste of Americana, with reclaimed wood ceilings, lacquered teal walls and deep red booths as well as a menu that draws on fresh local seafood and produce from island farms. Overlooking the water, the restaurant serves sophisticated fare in a more relaxed setting.
  • For the ultimate stay, book the top-floor Presidential Skyhouse Wing. Composed of three rooms and suites, each with its own key to ensure privacy, it offers exquisite views and a plethora of perks, including a fully equipped kitchen, an elegant dining room and a spacious balcony.
  • In warm weather, book a poolside cabana, which features a daybed, a welcome prosecco toast, an insulated Harbor View Hotel water bottle and flip-flops. You’ll also have a dedicated attendant to fetch food and drinks while you swim in the heated saltwater pool.
  • Unplug and unwind by stepping out to the vast veranda, sitting in one of the white rocking chairs and watching the waves roll in.
