The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp

Remote luxury in the Kenyan wilds
VERIFIED LUXURY
Set along the banks of the Sand River in Kenya’s legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve,The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp overlooks one of the region’s most active wildlife corridors where animals gather year-round, and migrating wildebeest and zebra pass through during the annual Great Migration.

Opened in 2025, the all-inclusive camp features just 20 tented suites nestled in the canopy, while delivering all the comforts expected from a Ritz-Carlton address. Days unfold with safari rituals: twice-daily private game drives in open-air Land Cruisers, bush breakfasts and sundowners in the wilderness. Back at camp, private decks and plunge pools keep guests cool and the savannah in full view, while evenings bring fireside cocktails or stargazing dinners.

Thoughtful extras set this luxury safari camp apart. Guests can borrow professional photography equipment and learn techniques to capture the wildlife, while locally inspired treatments provide a rejuvenating counterpoint at the spa.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • July through October is the most sought-after time to visit, when millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle traverse the Sand River and nearby Mara River as part of their annual migration across East Africa. Yet the reserve rewards visitors year-round. Beyond the migration, the Maasai Mara is one of the continent’s best places to encounter the "big five," along with healthy populations of cheetahs, giraffes and hippos.
  • Dining centers on Nest, the main dining room, where you’ll find a private wine cellar and sky deck, and The Canopy lounge bar for lighter snacks accompanied by expertly executed cocktails. The most memorable experiences, though, tend to be the private meals in nature — a picnic lunch on the savannah, dinner under the stars, or a traditional fireside boma feast complete with storytelling, music and dancing.
  • Each suite includes a dedicated butler known as an encholiek, a Maasai term fora trusted guide and companion. Their presence is subtle but invaluable, whether that’s delivering coffee before an early-morning drive, arranging a private dinner on your deck, or discreetly ensuring every detail of your stay feels seamless.
  • The camp places an emphasis on helping guests understand the people and history that have shaped the Maasai Mara. In the Map Room, resident experts use historical maps, expedition journals and local knowledge to bring the landscape to life, while cultural experiences such as village visits, bead-making workshops and the camp's nightly Call to Dusk ritual offer meaningful insight into local traditions.
  • Nestled among the canopy, Whispering Tree Spa offers a serene refuge for healing therapies featuring acacia, shea butter and aloe. Each session begins with a Welcome to the Wild ritual comprising a water blessing followed by a mineral-rich foot soak and scrub with aromatic oils.

The Rooms

  • These elevated accommodations offer far more space and comfort than the term “tented” might suggest. Expect spacious bedrooms and separate living areas, as well as a well-stocked cocktail bar and air conditioning. Each suite includes a private deck, complete with day beds and infinity-edge pools, so you can spot elephants or antelope moving through the grass while cooling off between game drives.
  • The camp offers four suite categories, ranging from 1,754-square-foot one-bedroom retreats to sprawling residences approaching 3,000 square feet. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames a variety of perspectives, from the Sand River and distant Serengeti plains to the camp's lush treetop canopy, while the generous layouts ensure a strong sense of privacy throughout.
  • Inside, the spaces feel more like polished suites than rustic camps, with canopied four-poster beds, herringbone floors and generous lounge areas arranged beneath the vaulted canvas. Incorporating subtle Maasai-inspired motifs, the decor draws from the surrounding landscape — warm earth tones, rich wood accents and woven textiles that feel rooted in the locale.
  • Even entry-level suites include at least two bathrooms, ensuring plenty of privacy for everyone. The primary bathrooms feature double vanities, oversized marble rain showers, whirlpool baths and deep soaking copper tubs positioned to take in views of the reserve.
  • The Presidential Suite is the camp’s most exclusive accommodation. Designed more like a private safari residence than a hotel suite, the sprawling space features two separate bedroom wings flanking a central living pavilion for added privacy. A sprawling deck with an oversized pool, multiple daybeds and dedicated indoor/outdoor dining areas provides ample space to unwind, while private game drives, all-inclusive gourmet dining and exclusive amenities elevate the VIP experience even further.
