Our Inspector's Highlights
- The historic property was actually built as a hotel (not necessarily the case with other older buildings) and this fact translates to wide hallways, soaring ceilings and built-for-comfort accommodations.
- The 10-treatment room Waldorf Astoria Spa is a favorite among both hotel guests and locals. In fact, it’s a top choice of among local professional athletes and their spouses.
- The rooftop pool — reserved for guests of the luxury hotel only — is a lovely oasis with a bubbling fountain, a large pool bar and an arsenal to combat the notorious New Orleans heat (think oversized umbrellas, whirling fans and ice-cold water and popsicles served poolside).
- Fitness enthusiasts should head to 24-hour gym, featuring Precor equipment as well as lockers and showers.
- The luxury hotel is home to well-known Sazerac Bar, the grande dame of New Orleans cocktail lounges. Constructed from a single piece of African walnut with Paul Ninas’ mural (look for the infamous bullet hole), this handsome salon is where tourists can rub elbows with the locals who’ve come to celebrate law school graduations, wedding engagements and other events over potent sazeracs.
The Rooms
- Each guest room is decorated in elegant furnishings, with rich leather details, formal dark wood furniture and thick, luxe fabrics. Luxuriate in the Waldorf Serenity beds, high-end linens and Ferragamo bath products.
- Should you require some space to spread out, all suites feature a separate seating area, while the six Astoria Suites have 1,350 square feet of living space.
- Here, you are secluded along a private hallway on the second floor, arranged like the traditional New Orleans shotgun-style homes, flanked by large bay windows, clawfoot tubs, and helmed by a personal concierge.
The Restaurants
- Italian restaurant Domenica is famous for its lively happy hour, where nearly everyone inside is sipping on crisp white wine and sharing clam pizza (topped with Parmigiano Reggiano, Calabrese peppers, roasted garlic and oregano), and nibbling on the popular roasted cauliflower with sea salt and whipped feta.
- Savor Southern fare all day long in the bustling The Fountain Lounge, where live entertainment, shareable plates and tantalizing tipples have been the order of the day since 1938.
- For a quieter retreat, head for Teddy's Cafe for coffee and sweet treats — beignets and Waldorf Astoria's classic red velvet cake are always excellent options.
