The Chatwal, New York

Glamour in New York's Theater District
VERIFIED LUXURY

What was once home to The Lambs, the nation’s first professional theater organization, The Chatwal, New York is now a luxurious hotel with ornate touches that harken back to a bygone era. The Chatwal sits in the heart of Manhattan’s Theater District, a quick walk from Times Square, yet emits an exclusive and luxurious aura the moment you walk through the door.

Each of the 76 rooms is meticulously designed in a 1930s empire art deco style — think built-in cabinets wrapped in faux leather and rich color schemes such as oxblood red and light ochre.

A culinary hot spot, The Lambs Club Restaurant retains that sleek design flavor in its dining room. A nod to the historic theater group, the restaurant serves up modern takes on American classics. During breakfast, you’ll see New Yorkers and guests alike fueling up with marvelous omelets (among the fluffiest you’ll ever have), while dinner brings a polished crowd.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Considering the 1905 Stanford White-designed building was once home to America’s first theatrical group, it makes perfect sense that The Chatwal would be in the heart of New York’s Theater District.
  • Just a five-minute walk from Times Square, the luxury hotel offers easy access to famous Broadway theaters and legendary shopping on Fifth Avenue.
  • You can walk to Central Park in less than 20 minutes, be at Rockefeller Center for some wintertime ice skating in about 10 minutes and make it to the Hudson River Greenway for a scenic jog in 20 minutes.
  • On the hotel’s lower level, you’ll find the Naturopathica Spa & Healing Center with a serene indoor pool, private steam rooms and a well-stocked fitness studio, making it the perfect place to recharge.
  • Thierry Despont designed the 10 Chatwal Crown suites, each with a distinct theme, like the 875-square-foot Director Suite and the 550-square-foot Garden Suite.

Things to Know

  • The Chatwal is a great place to visit no matter what time of year it is, but we’re partial to the address in spring (because of its proximity to Central Park) and winter (you can almost see Rockefeller Plaza’s Christmas tree from your room).
  • Considering The Chatwal is within the Theater District, there’s no excuse not to catch a Broadway show during your visit.
  • Speaking of the stage, The Lambs Club offers a pre-theater menu on Tuesday through Saturday, making it the ideal spot to swing by before the curtain is raised.
  • Conquer the Big Apple on two wheels, courtesy of the hotel's complimentary signature bikes. The Chatwal even provides a curated map of must-see spots.
