The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel

An updated art-deco icon on the Upper East Side
VERIFIED LUXURY
The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel, has returned to its rightful seat as one of the long-reigning legends of the Upper East Side. The tony white marble beaux-arts beauty originally opened its doors in 1926 and served as an integral part of the Uptown scene — a vibrant Old Hollywood hub where Bette Davis and John F. Kennedy both once signed the hotel's guest book — until shutting its doors in 2020.

Fortunately, the European-based Corinthia Hotels saved the day with a gut renovation and a vision for The Surrey's next chapter as the company’s first U.S. property. The building's facade remains untouched; however, the new interiors designed by Martin Brudnizki are a sight to behold. They respectfully pay tribute to the hotel's bygone art-deco days while infusing a fresh and modern feel, making The Surrey a delightful blend of Manhattan's past and present.

A new part of the hotel’s present is an outpost of Casa Tua. This private club — popular among the jet-set with locations in Miami, Aspen and Paris — operates the hotel's dining room and lounge, ensuring that The Surrey is a prime spot to see and be seen.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Upper East Side hotel’s partnership with the exclusive member’s club Casa Tua adds a distinctly hip, of-the-moment feel. Casa Tua has two dedicated food and beverage spaces for hotel guests (a third is reserved for club members). The Restaurant serves laid-back Italian fare in a warm setting. Along with dishes like branzino, served whole and designed to share, diners can expect to find family pictures from Casa Tua founder Miky Grendene featured throughout the menu, heightening the feeling of intimacy.
  • The luxury French wellness brand Sisley Paris partnered with the 2,500-square-foot spa to create a sophisticated space with an innovative treatment menu. Book the Surrey-exclusive Black Rose re-plumping facial and scalp massage. The experience combines meditative, deep breathing; soothing touches; and the application of effective products from Sisley’s line, delicately scented with rose.
  • The Surrey’s covetable 76th Street and Madison address is hard to beat. Central Park is close enough to function as a backyard, and renowned cultural institutions like The Met, Guggenheim and Frick Collection are only a few steps away.
  • With such stalwart art institutions within walking distance, the hotel's art collection must keep up with its illustrious neighbors. The Surrey tapped the talent at VISTO Gallery to curate an impressive collection throughout the building, celebrating New York's legendary creative talent. Find George Condo figures, Robert Mapplethorpe photography and contemporary pieces by Brooklyn-based weaver Ethan Cook and Turkish illustrator Gizem Vural.
  • Casa Tua’s other space, the hotel’s lounge, exudes comfort and cool, with dim lighting; sleek, Italian cowhide lounge chairs; stacks of meticulously arranged coffee table books; and a working fireplace. It's the epitome of a hotel lounge, especially when you're savoring a martini.

The Rooms

  • The Surrey features 100 accommodations, including 30 suites, that range in size from 315-square-foot Deluxe Rooms to 830-square-foot Grand Deluxe Suites. By Manhattan standards, every accommodation category feels luxuriously spacious.
  • The 70 guest rooms, by acclaimed designer Martin Brudnizki — known for his work on The Beekman and The Fifth Avenue Hotel — feature a soft art-deco style. Each room is inspired by a unique color: rich terra cotta, springtime green and elegant light blue. These hues are subtly woven throughout the space, including silk walls, corresponding colored cabinet inlays and handcrafted Murano chandeliers.
  • Luxurious yet understated amenities such as fresh flowers, Antica Farmacista products, an in-wall Bluetooth speaker, Frette linens, marble bathrooms and plush bathrobes embroidered with the Surrey seal in the room’s corresponding color ensure a comfortable stay.
  • The luxury hotel’s signature suites pay a romantic homage to The Surrey’s backyard, Central Park. Four of the park’s bridges inspire the units: the Bethesda, Pine Bank, Greywacke and Bow (which is honored in the Surrey Suite). Crown moldings that reflect the unique architectural style of each bridge and mosaic-tiled illustrations of the structures will sweep guests into a romantic New York City reverie.
